8 boys rescued from flooded Thai cave

Four Of The Boys Trapped In Thai Cave Rescued

A truck carrying oxygen tanks arrives outside the Tham Luang cave complex, where 12 schoolboys and their soccer coach are trapped inside a flooded cave, in the northern province of Chiang Rai, Thailand, July 8, 2018.

Rescue workers in Thailand on Monday brought four boys safely out of a labyrinthine flooded cave complex where a 12-member soccer squad and their coach were trapped for more than two weeks, taking the total number rescued to eight. But a father of one of the boys told Reuters parents "can't visit our boys in hospital" and that "we have not been told which child has been brought out".

Four of the boys were safely rescued on Sunday after rescuers carried out a risky operation, amid fears the waters will rise again to a unsafe level.

He said the four boys rescued on Monday have been sent to the hospital and their conditions are good, "better than those brought out yesterday".

The Sydney Morning Herald reported that Richard Harris, an anesthetist from Adelaide, Australia, has been one of the global dive experts seconded to assist with the hard and unsafe rescue mission.

A green tarpaulin is used to cover the entrance of the Chiangrai Prachanukroh Hospital, where the four rescued boys are being kept in quarantine.

The boys, ages 11-16, and their 25-year-old became stranded when they went exploring in the cave after a practice game.

Three Thai Navy Seal divers and a medic are still on their way out of the cave.

Each boy is being accompanied by two divers through the dark and complex cave system.

The first four rescued boys have been placed in a ward set aside specifically for the cave rescue, a source at the hospital said.

Australian Foreign Minister Julie Bishop, in an interview with CNN affiliate Nine News Australia Monday, said that the remainder of the boys were also expected to be extracted in batches.

He did not say how many boys the team hoped to bring out on Monday.

The extraction of the four on Monday followed a similar pattern to the previous day, with the youngsters emerging in quick succession just before nightfall after navigating a treacherous escape route of more than four kilometres. Rescue mission commander Narongsak Osottanakorn told reporters that after being rescued they were in good spirits but hungry, specifically requesting pad kra pao.

All ten of the boys trapped in a flooded Thai cave have been rescued.

But Narongsak said earlier that recent mild weather and falling water levels had created optimal conditions for an underwater evacuation.

Getting to and from where the boys are has been an exhausting round trip, even for the experienced divers.

An official reportedly told a Thai TV station on Monday morning that they didn't want to name the boys because "they're afraid it will affect the parents of kids who still remain inside". One was that it was unknown how safe and dry the area where they had taken shelter would stay as Thailand's rainy season, which lasts until at least late October, picks up pace.
