Man Who Called Cops on Black Family at Pool Faces Blowback

Adam Bloom

Bloom has since resigned from his position as pool chair and board member, and has been fired from his job at a packaging company.

Bloom resigned Thursday as the "pool chair" and a board member from the homeowners association of Glenridge, his community in Winston-Salem.

The homeowners association has also released a statement (via Huffington Post) apologising to Abhulimen and vowing to redouble its efforts to "make sure no resident feels singled out again". Bloomed refused to apologize. An officer apologized to her.

Abhulimen's lawyer, on the other hand, told WXII12 that the incident was "traumatising" to her family. But he added that he was "not surprised by social media's desire to only get part of the story". This is one of several alleged racial profiling incidents in recent weeks.

"I think the situation is unfortunate that conclusions are being reached by people who have seen a 46-second video of their interaction".

Bloom described his leaving Sonoco as a "mutual separation".

Also on Friday, police released audio of Bloom's call, in which he tells a dispatcher that "we have a non-resident that's at the pool that refuses to leave".

In a Facebook video, the woman said her boyfriend had been unfairly targeted by the pool manager who asked him to not wear his socks in the pool. An officer tries to intervene, asking what is typically needed to enter the pool.

Bloom's lawyer John Vermitsky told the New York Post that another pool member had approached him asking to verify that Edwards belonged there. She said that it was a classic case of racial profiling as she and her kids were the only black people there.

The incident has garnered national attention.

By this time, Bloom had called Winston-Salem Police, who tried their best to defuse the situation.

Edwards asked the police if they could arrest the man for racial profiling, but they told her it's a civil matter. He also called police. A few hours later, she posted the video on her Facebook account and it went viral.

The police officers, who were clearly uncomfortable, were able to determine that Abhulimen's pool access card worked and that no crime was committed.

Adam Bloom, 40, identified by the Winston-Salem Police Department, asked for Edwards address, which she provided, and an ID to prove that she lived where she said she did.

"They kinda make their way around sometimes, but that's good enough for me today", Bloom says after the card works.

Bloom then asked for an ID, and that's when the woman became angry, Vermitsky explained. "Nobody else was asked to see their ID", she told them.

The questioning eventually led Abhulimen to call what was happening racial profiling, and Bloom chose to dial police to allow a "neutral third party" to resolve the situation.

Vermitsky said his client has had to take his wife and children away from their home to a safe location. Lawyer John Vermitsky issued a statement Friday saying his client feels awful and didn't intend to discriminate.
