Thon Maker Releases Statement On Last Night's Australia/Philippines Basketball Brawl

Andray Blatche of Gilas Pilipinas blocks a shot by Cheng-ju Lu of Chinese Taipei. Gilas won 93-71

World basketball's governing body Fiba has opened disciplinary proceedings against the teams and said a decision would be announced in the coming days.

Philippine and Australian players engage in a brawl during their FIBA World Cup Asian qualifier game at the Philippine arena in Bocaue town, Bulacan province, north of Manila on July 2, 2018.

In a statement prior to Monday night's match, the Australian team, through Mark Bradtke of the Australian Basketball Federation, said it meant no disrespect and was just looking after the welfare of its players. "We don't play the game in that spirit. We didn't want what happened to happen", Philippines basketball president Al Panlilo said in an address to fans as the game was stopped, according to ABS-CBN News.

The game eventually resumed in farcical fashion with Philippines fielding three players against Australia's five.

Also ejected were Pogoy, Terrence Romeo, Jayson Castro, Calvin Abueva, Troy Rosario, Matthew Wright, Japeth Aguilar and Carl Bryan Cruz.

The fracas started when Australian guard Chris Goulding received an elbow to the face and was then barged to the ground by Roger Pogoy on the Filipino's drive, provoking his teammate Daniel Kickert to retaliate with a stiff elbow that sent Pogoy to the floor.

"We want basketball to be the victor". The score ended in Australia's favor at 79-48, when officials called off the game after repeated (and seemingly intentional) fouls from the Philippines.

One of the craziest snippets from the entire melee came from Bucks and Australia star Maker though.

He said the incident has elevated their awareness of security for the team as they play global games in the future.

This, of course, was just minutes after they had engaged in a fight that included them throwing chairs at opponents' head and blindside cheap-shotting players.

The brawl was sparked when Ron Artest fouled Detroit's Ben Wallace, with Artest suspended for the remainder of the season, a sanction that saw him sit out 73 games and cost him about $US7m in lost wages.

Scheduled post-match press conferences for both teams were cancelled.

The Australian national team issued an apology for its behavior soon after the game.
