Trump narrows down Supreme Court Justice replacements

Trump did not identify the finalists for the slot being vacated by retiring Justice Anthony Kennedy, and said he would interview "one or two" candidates during his weekend stay at his golf club in Bedminster, N.J.

"We have to pick one that's going to be there 40 years, 45 years", Trump said at a rally on Thursday. But Republican Senator John McCain, who has an aggressive form of brain cancer, has been absent from the Senate for months, meaning that if all Senate Democrats vote against Trump's eventual nominee, it would take only one Republican defection to defeat his pick. He helped compile a 25-person list of likely nominees from which Trump has said he will make his selection.

When asked whether he would be asking candidates about their opinions on abortion rights, Trump stated, "That's not a question I'll be asking". Now, it's down to six or seven being interviewed.

While Kennedy was a conservative, he proved to be a somewhat unpredictable "swing" vote over his long career.

Left-wing and right-wing groups have sprung into high gear since Kennedy's announcement on Wednesday that he would step down, putting the balance of the court on key issues like abortion and gay rights into question.

Steven Law, president of the Senate Leadership Fund, a campaign group aligned with McConnell, said the group is running digital ads in 10 states that Trump won in 2016 where Democratic senators are now up for re-election.

Democrats had argued that any nomination should be delayed until after the midterm elections in November.

On the campaign trail, Trump pledged to appoint a justice who would overturn Roe v. Wade, the landmark supreme court case that legalized abortion, saying as a candidate that reversing the decision "will happen, automatically" under his presidency.

They are also the only two Republican women who support abortion rights - with some caveats - and they could ultimately be the deciding votes on the Supreme Court nomination if all 49 members of the Senate Democratic caucus (including two independents) band together and oppose the nominee as a unified block.

The Democrats - Joe Manchin of West Virginia, Joe Donnelly of IN and Heidi Heitkamp of North Dakota - are running for re-election IN November IN states Trump won IN 2016.

Democrat Bill Nelson, asked by reporters if a nominee's views on Roe v. Wade will be important to him, said, "very".
