Melania returns to US-Mexico border amid separation outcry

The President's tweet is the latest attempt to defend his now reversed policy of separating children from their parents by claiming it is similar to what Obama did when he was in power

The Trump administration's policy of separating children from immigrant parents caught crossing the border illegally triggered enormous political pressure and public outrage across the country and the world.

US District Judge Dana Sabraw in San Diego ordered border authorities to reunite children with their families within 30 days of the Tuesday ruling, or 14 days if the child is younger than five. Many were placed hundreds of miles away from one another and have been struggling to be reunited.

Thursday's trip is the second trip Melania Trump has made to a border state to meet face to face with those dealing with her husband's hard-line immigration policies.

It was removed before she disembarked in Texas and was not seen again.

The choice spawned a slew of speculation about what the first lady, a former model, may have meant.

The first lady's communications director Stephanie Grisham said Mrs. Trump was not trying to send a message with the jacket. But the first lady's husband, President Donald Trump, undercut the no-message message by tweeting that his wife was saying she really doesn't care about the "fake news" media. Luckily, this time around, she learned from her mistake as her decision overshadowed the real issue - the fact that migrant children are being separated from their families and spread across the United States in different holding facilities. The court also prohibited, absent a waiver, the deportation of parents without their children, and it said that in the future children can only be separated from a parent if that parent poses a threat to the child.

It was the second trip in a week for the USA first lady to see children separated from their parents after her husband's administration cracked down on migrants at the southern border. "She's advocating for quality care for these children under hard circumstances", Stephanie Grisham told reporters.

Last week, Mrs. Trump met with officials who work with detained families in McAllen, Texas. A few dozen protesters ran along the first lady's motorcade as it departed.

The overall goal of the Arizona visit, Grisham said, is to provide insight to Trump as she continues to "encourage family reunification" and urge Congress "to fix our broken immigration system".

"Migration is a human right".

Even though the policy has ended, there remain more than 2,000 immigrant children in government-contracted shelters that were separated from their parents at the border.
