Mount Agung: Jetstar and Indonesia AirAsia to resume flights

More Than 400 Flights Cancelled As Volcano Forces Bali Shutdown

On Thursday evening, a striking orange-red glow could be seen at the top of the volcano after it shot smoke and ash into the sky.

"Due to a volcanic ash cloud caused by Mount Agung in Bali, it is now not safe to operate flights to or from Denpasar Airport", the statement said.

More than 20 flights across Jetstar, Qantas, Virgin and Air Asia were disrupted between Thursday night and this morning due to the ash cloud moving toward Denpasar airport.

The return flight NZ246 from Denpasar to Auckland has also been cancelled.

Almost 450 flights were canceled Friday, affecting some 75,000 people, as the Mount Agung volcano gushed a 2,500-meter (8,200-feet) column of ash and smoke for a second day.

AirAsia cancelled the 6.30pm and 8.00pm flights between Denpasar and Perth, as well as the 7.30pm Denpasar to Perth flight amid fears the ash could affect the aircraft engines.

However, it said, several flights remained as scheduled until further notice.

Australians flying to and from Bali are urged to check their airlines' website for updates with flights between Sydney, Melbourne and Perth and Bali delayed, cancelled and turned back.

Mount Agung is about 70km northeast of Bali's tourist hotspot of Kuta.

It had a dramatic increase in activity last year, forcing the evacuation of tens of thousands of people, but had quietened by early this year.

Indonesia is the world's most active volcanic region and lies on the Pacific "Ring of Fire" where tectonic plates collide, causing frequent volcanic and seismic activities.

The airport on Indonesia's holiday island of Bali reopened on Friday after ash from a volcano forced a brief closure and the cancellation of more than 300 flights. Its last major eruption was in 1963 and killed about 1200 people.

Himawari satellite data from the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) show that volcanic ash had covered the air space above Ngurah Rai airport.
