Who can qualify for the round of 16 and how?

World Cup permutations: Who can go through to last 16 and who can crash out? | Daily Star

Today, playing the hosts Russian Federation, they showed their class as they eased to a 3-0 victory although to be fair they were aided by their opponents, who contrived to hand them an own goal and a sending-off within the first 40 minutes. That said, what would they prefer: a Russian team with home-field advantage or a side from Uruguay that poses greater danger?

Andres Iniesta's lacklustre performance symbolised Spain's problems in this tournament.

In their two games, they have netted eight goals and put together some tremendous attacking patterns.

Uruguay has won Group A, and will take on the Group B runner-up, Portugal, on Saturday.

The Three Lions now top Group G ahead of the showdown with rivals Belgium in Kaliningrad on Thursday night.

Spain's Diego Costa celebrates scoring their first goal against Portugal.

Brazil would be safely through with a win or a draw against Serbia and will top the group unless Switzerland better their result, or match it with a better goal margin.

Spain are in the best position to progress, as they only need a point against Morocco.

The Danes (four points) are unbeaten and on course to finish second with a draw, but if they fall behind, they will have to remain mindful of the Australia-Peru match in Sochi. The Brazilians have a slight advantage in goal difference in case they finish even but they also have a tougher matchup: Serbia (three points) on Wednesday in Moscow, while the Swiss play Costa Rica (none) in Nizhny Novgorod.

Australia need to beat bottom side Peru and hope Denmark lose to France, and also need at least a two-goal swing in their favour.

Croatia has been the high-flyer of this group with convincing wins over the Argentines and Nigeria. Draws in both games would see qualification determined by goals scored. While their match transpires, they'll be rooting for Croatia to defeat or tie Iceland. Croatia have six points and Nigeria have three points, while Argentina and Iceland both have one point. Germany looked flat in their loss to Mexico and needed an injury-time goal to defeat Sweden.

Both teams now have identical goal differences (eight scored, two conceded) and if this game is tied, the group victor will be determined by fair play. They will also go through with any win should Sweden fail to beat Mexico.

In the first co-hosted World Cup, Brazil went on to become champions again, lifting the trophy for a fifth time, after comfortably progressing as winners of Group C ahead of Turkey.

Odds: 62.5% to win, 100% to advance. It can also move on if it ties with Mexico AND South Korea beats Germany, or IF Germany and South Korea ends in a tie AND Sweden finishes ahead of those teams on countback.

Despite two losses South Korea still have a slim chance of advancing but they would need to beat Germany and hope both that Sweden lose to Mexico and that the goal difference goes their way. A draw on Monday and Russian Federation top the group on goal difference. The victor takes it. England are ahead on the disciplinary front with one fewer yellow card than Belgium. They then went on to beat Chile to sit on the second spot with four points a day before the final groupstage match between West Germany and Austria.
