Croatia top group after last minute winner against Iceland

Croatia is already through to the knockout stage of the World Cup, but Iceland is still vying for a place in the last 16 when the two familiar foes meet to wrap up Group D play in Rostov-on-Don. Rakitic came close with a free-kick and Kramaric shot just wide from inside the box before Perisic scored the victor in the 90th minute with a left-foot shot past the Iceland keeper.

Badelj didn't have to wait long though as two minutes later he found himself unmarked in the box to hammer in a cross from Pivaric to give Croatia a 1-0 lead.

Dalic rested most of the side that thumped Argentina 3-0, with only captain Luka Modric and winger Perisic keeping their places.

The victor of Group D will play the runner-up in Group C, while the runner-up in Group D will play the victor of Group C in the round of 16.

"We have not played many games like this against a strong team like Croatia and created as many chances as we did", Hallgrimsson told reporters.

Croatia showed none of that lethargy to start the second half, however, and it was in the 53rd minute when Badelj broke through.

"Now we can concentrate on preparations for the knockout stage", said Badelj.

Iceland faced a huge task as Nigeria nearly simultaneously equalised against Argentina, but it reacted swiftly.

On 73 minutes Bjarnason fluffed a close-range opportunity but Iceland's lifeline arrived a minute later when Dejan Lovren handled a cross by Sigurdsson in the penalty area.

Sverrir Ingason forced Kalinic to another spectacular save, seconds before his header shaved the top of the bar.

Sigurdsson had ballooned a penalty over the bar against Nigeria, but this time dispatched his shot into the roof of the net with Kalinic diving the wrong way. Instead, the Croats will face Denmark on Sunday in Nizhny Novgorod and Argentina will take on France on Saturday in Kazan.

Then on 90 minutes, Perisic delivered the final blow. Get live updates of Croatia vs Iceland FIFA World Cup 2018 Group D match here. We have 9 points which is important for us.
