Diego Costa denies provocation but admits to lucky goal against Iran

Iran beat Morocco 1-0 in their opening game

Fernando Hierro reserved special praise for the commitment shown by Spain's match-winner Diego Costa in their narrow 1-0 triumph over Iran in Kazan on Wednesday.

Andres Iniesta found Costa in the box, and although Iran defender Ramin Rezaeian got to the ball first, his attempted clearance cannoned off the Atletico Madrid striker's knee and into the bottom right-hand corner of the net.

"We are very happy with three points".

"We started well, but then we lost our rhythm because of frequent pauses".

"It will be a tough game but you have to remember we're a really united team that's been together for many years".

"It was not a miracle that we won", Queiroz said.

"If the game against Morocco was the World Cup final for us, the game against Spain will be the Universe Cup final", said the former Real Madrid coach.

"I have 23 players with their own character and you can not treat them all the same", he told his Iran pre-match press conference when asked what he had said to the goalkeeper.

Iran have emerged as the early challengers to Spain and Portugal in Group B after Aziz Bouhaddouz's 95th-minute own-goal sealed a dramatic 1-0 win in Saint Petersburg.

Antoine Griezmann was the first footballer in World Cup history to have successfully scored a goal after a VAR review in the match between France and Australia.

That goal is one step closer thanks to Costa's intervention, but Spain need to add more strings to their bow and be more malleable in the face of their opponent after being slow to adapt against Iran.

Iran was later denied an equaliser by the video assistant referee as the got a word in his ear that "goal-scorer" Saeid Ezatolahi was in fact offside. "Portugal were up against a great Morocco team today".

After a match played out to a deafening blare from vuvuzela horns from a huge army of Iranian fans, Spain will feel relieved to have emerged with maximum points. It is true it wasn't a nice thing for anyone, a hard situation for everyone, and now we want to concentrate on what we have to do.

Facing a complex challenge against the 2010 champions, Queiroz has been urging his players to keep playing with passion to stand a chance against Diego Costa and co.

Hierro brought winger Lucas Vazquez into his starting side in place of midfielder Koke, seeking more dynamism to break down Iran's wall. "We hope everything will be alright".
