Google to invest $550 million in China e-commerce giant JD.com

Google makes $550M strategic investment in Chinese e-commerce firm JD.com

To return the favor, the retailer will allow results to appear in the Shopping section of Googles search engine. The Google-JD.com partnership could help JD.com keep an open channel to the US and would give Google a foothold in China, where it's had trouble conducting business as most of its services are blocked because it won't censor results.

The company said Monday it will invest $550 million in JD.com, a leading Chinese e-commerce company also known as Jing Dong, to provide consumers easier options to shop online and tap into the Southeast Asian market.

The shares are equivalent to a almost one percent stake in the company, according to a JD.com spokesman. Japan's SoftBank Group Corp, which is making big internet investments around the globe, is a major investor in Alibaba.

JD.com said earlier this year that it planned to make its USA debut in the second half of 2018, posing a new challenge for Amazon.

The partnership will combine Google's technology and JD's logistics and supply chain to develop "next generation retail infrastructure solutions", and "personalised and frictionless" shopping experiences.

JD's partnership with Google, adds to the company's portfolio of partnerships, such as its longstanding deal with Chinese tech giant Tencent, along with a host of retail giants including Walmart and Suning.

The investment may give Google access to more consumer data, which can be used to boost usage of Google Shopping, said Morningstar analyst Ali Mogharabi.
