Fire engulfs Glasgow art school

Firefighters put ladders against the building to douse from close range while others used at least six high-pressure hoses to spray from farther range

The blaze also spread to "several properties" nearby, the fire and rescue service have said.

The Mackintosh Building - designed by the famed Scottish art nouveau architect and designer Charles Rennie Mackintosh - was badly damaged by fire in May 2014 and had undergone extensive renovation work since. The area was swiftly evacuated and no casualties were reported.

About 50 crew remained at the scene almost 12 hours later, working to extinguish "a few pockets of fire", the fire service said.

The news agency said the fire had spread to the nearby campus and a nightclub.

Margaret Archbold, 48, a Glasgow artist who studied fine art at the school and graduated in 1994, said: "It shouldn't have happened again".

"This is a devastating loss for Glasgow", deputy assistant chief fire officer Peter Heath told a press conference.

The devastating fire that has engulfed the Glasgow School of Art has sparked shock in Glasgow, across Scotland and around the world. Heath said the theater was still on fire and its roof had partly collapsed, but the blaze was no longer spreading.

He told the BBC: "We've helped with the restoration of the existing building - we put in about £10m into that restoration".

Scottish Secretary David Mundell said the United Kingdom government also stood ready to help "financially or otherwise" following the latest blaze.

"All of us hope the building can be saved but it's too early to draw any conclusions", she said.

Scotland's First Minister has said the fire that ripped through Glasgow's historic School of Art is "heartbreaking" as she visited the scene to meet firefighters tackling the blaze.

He won a competition to design the building in 1897 and it took around 10 years to complete.

The 2014 fire, begun when gases from a foam canister used in a student project were ignited accidentally, caused significant damage and restoration work was still underway.

A multi-million pound restoration project was underway in parts of the school when the fire broke out late on Friday evening.

"The fire brigade are now on scene".

"We remain firefighting in what is a very challenging situation", he said.

Many deplored what they called the cruel irony of the fire coming hours after a giant mural depicting Charles Rennie Mackintosh was unveiled elsewhere in Glasgow.
