New Tory Brexit bust-up puts May under threat again

The former attorney general said it was important for MPs to have a real say on a Brexit deal.

Pro-EU lawmakers threatened on Wednesday to withdraw their support for Prime Minister Theresa May's Brexit strategy if she does not follow through on concessions they thought they had been promised.

"I appeal to colleagues across the debate - Leave, Remain and those in the middle - to support Dominic Grieve's amendment to allow us as Members of Parliament to do our job and make sure the Government does not sell us a pup".

In an interview with the BBC, Mr Grieve as described the amendment as "unacceptable". "It is not in accordance with the normal procedures of the House of Commons and it totally negates the point of the amendment, which was to give MPs a say".

"I get frustrated that we are still wasting time quibbling over process issues from people who have never respected the result of the referendum".

Rebels are angry because the Government amendment leaves Parliament facing a "deal or no deal" choice.

Mrs May avoided nearly certain defeat in the House of Commons on Tuesday by inviting potential rebels into her private office and assuring them that their concerns about having a "meaningful vote" on the final Brexit deal would be addressed.

Asked what he would do next, on BBC One's Question Time, he said: "I think a group of us will talk further to the government and try to resolve it".

The dispute between the government and a group of soft Brexit Tories centers around a "meaningful vote" on any eventual deal negotiated with Brussels, created to enable MPs to vote down the final agreement without risking leaving the European Union with no deal at all.

The Prime Minister saw off defeat on the EU Withdrawal Bill at the last minute on Tuesday by persuading rebels that she would offer concessions to address their concerns about being given a truly "meaningful vote" on the final Brexit deal.

"Grateful for the conversations but without consultation what was agreed earlier today has been changed".

And Sarah Wollaston tweeted: "So just to be clear we are now going to have to amend the "unamendable" after the agreed amendable amendment acquired a sneaky sting in the tail".

Signalling rebels will seek to remove the unamendable nature of the government's proposal, she tweeted: "Would be amusing if only it wasn't such a serious issue, preventing the most destructive Brexit matters to the majority in parliament".

In the House of Commons on Thursday morning, Labor's Brexit spokesman Sir Keir Starmer pressed Brexit Secretary David Davis on seemingly conflicting accounts of what the would-be rebels were offered.

In her own interview broadcast on Sunday the prime minister rejected the idea she had double-crossed her rebels.

"We need to keep enough control in Parliament to ensure that, if we do Brexit, we do it properly and do not end up with a deal that damages our country for generations to come", he wrote.

Ministers fear final Brexit deal might not be signed until DecemberWill more ministers resign over Brexit? They can not be trusted with Brexit.

Mr Tugendhat suggested there was no need to "beef up" the "meaningful vote" which now offers parliament the choice between the government's deal and Britain leaving the European Union with no deal.
