Taxi crash in Moscow's Red Square injures 8 people

Taxi drives into crowd of people in central Moscow, eight injured

A taxi has ran into a crowd of people in central Moscow injuring seven individuals, Russian traffic officials said Saturday, as the city hosts thousands of tourists during the World Cup 2018 matches.

The embassy said the women had been lightly injured and were receiving consular assistance.

The driver has been arrested after reportedly trying to flee the scene.

The extent of the injuries remains unclear although police say they are no life-threatening.

ITAR-TASS quoted the Moscow health department as saying eight people were hurt.

Moscow Police has said the man likely lost control of the vehicle. "He was shouting: "It wasn't me".

The agency that monitors Moscow's traffic safety said the driver is a citizen of the former Soviet republic of Kyrgyzstan who told police that the crash was not intentional.

Asked if the driver appeared drunk, the witness said: "No, he wasn't drunk".

Moscow traffic authority has published a photograph which shows two ambulances at the scene.

Moscow is one of 11 Russian cities where tournament games are being played.
