Sessions on IG report: 'We're not going to be defensive'

Comey 'broke norms but not biased' - agency watchdog report

President Trump on Saturday said that the Department of Justice inspector general report on the Hillary Clinton email probe "totally destroys" former FBI Director James Comey - and describes a "dark and unsafe period" in US history.

President Donald Trump said the inspector general's report on the Hillary Clinton email investigation proves that the FBI and the Justice Department acted out of bias against him, but the report itself does not back up his claims.

While castigating the FBI, Mr Trump stopped well short of the comments of his personal lawyer Rudy Giuliani, who on Thursday called on top Justice Department officials to "redeem themselves" by ending the investigation now being led by special counsel Robert Mueller into possible co-ordination between Russian Federation and the Trump campaign in 2016.

Donald Trump duly addressed the inspector general's report on the Clinton email inquiry on Friday, claiming he "did a great service to the people in firing" James Comey, the former director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

Ron Kaufman, a Quincy native who served as policy director in former President George H.W. Bush's White House, noting that President Trump has been heavily criticized for firing Comey, said the report "vindicates the president - Mr. Comey should have been let go". "We'll stop it", Mr Strzok responded.

Trump later added that he had tried to stay "uninvolved" in the Justice Department, stating Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein was "not happy" with the IG report.

The FBI is now led by someone Trump picked, Director Christopher A. Wray. It also said some FBI agents showed anti-Trump bias, but that bias did not affect the investigation. A document listing preliminary conclusions was obtained by the Associated Press ahead of the separate report from the Justice Department's internal watchdog.

During the investigation, Clinton had maintained her use was appropriate and that other high-ranking US officials had engaged in similar practices involving personal communication devices.

Former FBI Director James Comey testifies on Capitol Hill in May of a year ago.

Comey was quick to react to the watchdog's findings, saying that he doesn't agree with them, but respects the work of the DOJ inspector.

"The damage caused by these employees' actions extends far beyond the scope of the Midyear (Clinton) investigation and goes to the heart of the FBI's reputation for neutral fact finding and political independence", CNN quoted the report. Still, investigators said they did not find "documentary or testimonial evidence" that the bias affected the probe - a point echoed by Strzok's lawyer, Aitan Goelman, on Thursday.
