Phil Mickelson Took Advantage Of Risky Loophole With Double-Putt

VIDEO Phil Mickelson Hits Moving Ball Out of Frustration at U.S. Open

Mickelson was faced with a 12-foot bogey putt and after sending it well past the hole, Lefty ran to his ball to hit it again before it went down the slope.

That's was John Daly's reasoning when he pulled a similar stunt at the 1999 U.S. Open at Pinehurst, saying it was his response to poor pin positions. "I just finally did".

With six runners-up placings on his CV, the US Open clearly owed him one and although he began 10 behind halfway leader Dustin Johnson, hopes were high of a Mickelson charge. "But it was just a moment - I think it's just a moment of madness".

"I've never seen anything like that from a world-class player in my life", unusual said. On the 18th hole in the second round, Triplett stuck his putter in the ground as a backstop when his ball was headed back down from the hole. He got off to a decent start on Saturday with three consecutive pars and then birdied the 481-yard, par-4 fourth hole to get to 1-under for the day. Then he kept on with his round and parred the most hard hole on the course, the 14th, still smiling and acknowledging fans.

A player must not make a stroke at his ball while it is moving.

He breached Rule 14-5 for making a stroke while the ball was moving and was handed a two-stroke penalty, with the American taking two more putts to take his total on the hole to 10 shots.

"During play of the 13th hole Phil Mickelson made a stroke on the putting green at the time his ball was moving", a USGA statement about the incident read.

"No question it was going to go down into the same spot behind the bunker and I wasn't going to have a shot".

"I know it's a two-shot penalty, and at that time I just didn't feel like going back and forth and hitting the same shot over", Mickelson said after his round.
