Trump Wants to Pull U.S. Troops out of S.Korea

Watch Kim Jong Un arrive in Singapore

Trump has said the USA and South Korea should stop their joint military exercises as long as both sides are negotiating in good faith, which the president says is happening.

Hours after photos of vigorous handshakes and awkward smiles between North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and US President Donald Trump was sent out across the globe from their summit in Singapore, China officially suggested that the sanctions may now be removed gradually, pending discussions. It was a statement that has left the longstanding U.S. ally scrambling to clarify his meaning.

"That was a very last-minute", Trump said at a news conference, adding, "the remains will be coming back".

The first-ever meeting between sitting leaders of the two Cold War foes meant "the World has taken a big step back from potential Nuclear catastrophe!" he said in an earlier message.

The sprawling factory park in Kaesong, home to a stalled inter-Korean industrial complex, was shuttered in February 2016 to punish North Korea for its fourth nuclear test and a long-range rocket launch. "Thank you to Chairman Kim, our day together was historic!"

Observers welcomed the summit as a breakthrough for the two leaders, who in recent months had exchanged insults and war threats, but said that talks going forward would need to include more specifics in order to gauge North Korea's readiness to give up its weapons program. The VFW had asked Trump to raise the issue during negotiations. "I know a lot about airplanes; it's very expensive".

Trump said Tuesday that he would invite Kim to the White House at an "appropriate time".

China, North Korea's main ally, accounts for more than 90 percent of the isolated country's trade, and China's participation is widely seen as crucial for global sanctions to have any bite.

But in his comments about Kim, Trump has avoided mentioning the words "human rights", and has instead emphasized North Korea's potential for "commerce". But the apparently major concession to Mr Kim immediately startled South Korea.

"While the suspension of our military exercises is easily reversible, we shouldn't be stopping any joint exercises with our allies", Gallagher says.

Experts say the more preferable outcome for China would be for Trump and Kim to sign a peace treaty that formally ends the Korean War and paves the way for the eventual withdrawal of the 28,500 American troops in South Korea.

"Regarding all the importance of the solution of the problems between the United States and North Korea, including the peninsula denuclearization stages and security guarantees, it is clear that it will hardly be possible to solve these problems in the bilateral format", Lavrov stressed.
