Spain sack national coach Julen Lopetegui before start of World Cup

Real Madrid transfer news

Lopetegui and Luis Rubiales, who was elected federation president last month, will hold a press conference at Spain's base camp in Krasnodar, Russia, on Wednesday.

"We have to made a decision to fire the national coach", said Rubiales, who was supposed to be at Fifa's Congress in Moscow yesterday.

Lopetegui and Perez informed Rubiales just five minutes before Real's announcement, only three days before their first World Cup game, and the RFEF felt it was "unacceptable".

"You can't change two days of work in two days and a large part of the technical team is staying here with us too".

Fifty-one year old Lopetegui is due to take over at European Champions Real Madrid next month after Zinedine Zidane, who led the Spanish club to three successive Champions League titles, stepped down last month.

"I am very said, but wishing that we have a magnificent World Cup and that we win".

Rubiales continued; "I'm sure this will, in time, make us stronger".

And according to Spanish news outlet Don Balon, new Real Madrid boss Julen Lopetegui is desperate to sign Kante this summer.

"There's a lot to do".

Spain's first game at the Russian Federation 2018 World Cup is against neighbours Portugal on Friday. He said he would reveal his plans when he joined the national team, putting the spotlight on himself instead of Portugal's World Cup preparations, but he was yet to make any announcements. We are working on it. "I have spoken with the players and I can guarantee they will do everything, along with the new coach, to take the team as far as possible".

Hierro was asked about how Real Madrid handled the situation but the former Madrid player refused to comment on the La Liga side's actions.

Fernando Hierro will lead Spain into the World Cup after the shock sacking of Julen Lopetegui on the eve of the tournament - but admits he can not make any changes before the finals get under way.

"We had to react, I know that whatever I do I will be criticized, I accept that".

A replacement for Lopetegui has not been announced.

Spain face Portugal on Friday in the Fisht Olympic Stadium at 7pm, and all eyes will be on Hierro and his team as they look to put this incident behind them.
