Club rivalries not an issue for Southgate's England

Trent Alexander-Arnold confirmed for England start against Costa Rica

"What pleased me most is that Marcus Rashford enjoyed his football".

The goalkeeping department is probably the most scrutinised area of the English team, with Everton's 24-year-old keeper Jordan Pickford expected to start ahead of Jack Butland, who was relegated with Stoke City, while Nick Pope's only England appearance came as a substitute in the 2-0 friendly win over Costa Rica on Thursday evening. Fancy flicks, impish through-balls and drawing fouls everywhere he went; this was a virtuoso first-half performance that seasoned veterans dream of, albeit one spattered with the odd wrong decision that can be put down to immaturity. A new found confidence which Manchester United fans had been craving all season.

The 47-year-old had performed well with the under 21 side and had steadied the ship somewhat after stepping into the senior team on a temporary basis following Sam Allardyce's unsavoury departure.

Fabian Delph and Ruben Loftus-Cheek added further energy to the team, while Walker adds pace to the backline - pace which will be important in making recovery tackles. Sanchez coming in and taking a place hasn't helped him.

The striker was also involved in the second goal too. The midfielder insists he is ready to get "back to business" for his country but how much did leading his club on such a draining night really take out of his mental reserves? Southgate said he was delighted to have such competition for places.

It was Rashford, though, who proved to be the star of the show for what will not be the last time in his career. With Jesse Lingard looking a nailed-on starter, the person who Rashford could replace would be Raheem Sterling or Dele Alli. He has not partnered Harry Kane in the 352 formation yet.

Former England defender Lee Dixon told ITV: "The thing with Rashford is he ticked every box - his energy, his hold-up play, his enthusiasm".

"I do not see him starting the first game for England, but I can see him having an impact at some point in the tournament. His communication with the players is one of his greatest strengths - he never messes you around, so you know where you stand and that's been the case since he called me to say I wouldn't be in the 23".

"It could potentially be a breakthrough tournament for Rashford", Ferdinand told Goal.com.

However, it appears that Gareth Southgate is opting to go down a slightly different route this summer by utilising a 3-4-3 formation.

"In previous squads, I've not seen that".

"If they're not, we're not trying hard enough to take risks and be creative".
