New CDC report shows troubling rise in nation's suicide rates

In addition to being geographically widespread, US suicide rates rose in both men and women and across all racial and ethnic groups, the study found.

The Centers for Disease Control releases alarming statistics on mental health. "The most important thing we can do is realize that depression is not a sign of weakness, it is not a character flaw, it is a disease".

In Maryland, the number of suicides rose by more than a third, from 435 in 1999 to 586 in 2016, the most recent year for which data were available, according to the CDC.

That's also a resource for anyone anxious about a loved one.

There is already a rise in suicide rates in the U.S., increasing more than 25% since 1999.

The national speakers will talk about the latest advances in working with mental health and assessing and managing suicidal risk and exceptional trainings will be available to clinicians, educators, and community members.

"I know one of our callers mentioned a celebrity suicide 10-15 years ago that's still affecting him today", said Kelly Hall, a crisis intervention clinician.

According to the CDC report, the number of suicides has increased by more than 30 percent in half of the states in the USA, and more than half of the people who died by suicide didn't have a known mental health condition. Death from suicide has risen by 34 percent since 1999 in Pennsylvania. The CDC suggested that limiting access to lethal means - such as medications and firearms - among people at risk of suicide could help prevent suicide.

"Is it because of the availability of places that you can go for treatment?"

States can help ease unemployment and housing stress by providing temporary support.

"From individuals and communities to employers and healthcare professionals, everyone can play a role in efforts to help save lives and reverse this troubling rise in suicide".

For emergencies that are life-threatening, you should immediately call 911. "She just really paved the way for women in such a huge way that I don't think a lot of people know about her".

And you'll never know whether someone needs care if you don't ask, Dvoskin says.

Calls for better suicide-prevention efforts are mounting, after a federal study identified a sharp rise in suicide rates in the USA over the past two decades. "If that's all we focus on, we're missing out on an opportunity to tell the story of the universal human experience that we all struggle and fall down, but the norm is that people recover and get through it".
