Central Coast voters going to the polls on election day

Primary ballots mailed; unaffiliated voters to participate for first time

California is notoriously slow at counting votes, and this year is even slower since for the first time any ballots postmarked by Election Day will be accepted.

Democratic U.S. Rep. Adam Schiff tweeted Tuesday: "Don't let this affect the election results".

Coverage will be anchored by Tom Llamas, Kayna Whitworth and ABC News Political Director Rick Klein from California, with live reports from other primary states.

Polling stations across the Central Coast opened at 7am Tuesday morning for the California Primary election and voters are taking advantage of time-saving ways to cast ballots.

Newsom announced his candidacy in February 2015 - more than three years before the primary - and has dominated the race in both the polls and fundraising ever since. But if you have a vote by mail ballot, don't forget to sign and date the return envelope. Despite making education a foundation of her campaign, she lost the coveted endorsement of the California Teachers Association to Newsom and has struggled to get serious momentum in the race.

The answer will not only affect how Democrats who dominate Sacramento will steer the Golden State in the Trump era, but it could also carry significant weight in the battle for control of Congress this fall.

For Democrats, the state's unusual top-two primary system presented a risk: a multitude of candidates in some key races put Democrats at risk of splintering the vote and being shut out of key contests in November - including some Republican districts that Democratic presidential hopeful Hillary Clinton carried in 2016.

Recognising the high stakes, Trump sought to energise his supporters in a series of tweets praising his preferred California Republican candidates.

Democrats need to add a net total of 23 of the U.S. House of Representatives' 435 seats to gain a majority in the chamber. Democrats C.J. May III and Ry Meyer face off to represent the party on the ballot in this fall's general election, as incumbent Democrat Ralph Potter is not running for re-election.

"I still consider myself an independent, but I just won't vote Republican because of what's going on", she said.

California tops a list of eight states with primary contests Tuesday from Montana to MS and New Mexico to New Jersey.

New Jersey Democrat Robert Menendez is facing a primary challenge, as well.

"He's one of President Trump's biggest backers and would be a rubber stamp for the Trump Administration in the Senate", he said. Will it make a difference?

Francine Karuntzos, a 57-year-old retiree from Huntington Beach, California, said she has deep concerns about the Republican president - particularly his recent declaration that he could pardon himself.

The race in the 39th Congressional District was expected to be very close, in terms of determining whether Democrats would be boxed out of competing in November. "This is important for Americans and I believe showing my driver's license is not problem", he said.

Alabama, Iowa, Mississippi, New Jersey, New Mexico and South Dakota also have primary races today.

That's certainly the case for vulnerable Alabama Rep. Martha Roby, a Republican who faces a hard primary challenge after becoming the first to withdraw her endorsement of Trump in 2016.

Democratic voters, undeterred by a federal corruption case U.S. Sen.

Democrats want to take the 2nd District, the only Republican-held seat in New Mexico's congressional delegation.

Five candidates are looking to replace Chiang as treasurer, including Democrat Vivek Viswanathan, who embarked on a 600-plus-mile campaign run - literally - across the state.
