Active Shooter removed from Steam amidst controversy

Active Shooter Removed From Steam Dev Called A'Troll

"Active Shooter", the video game that would have allowed players to take part in a simulated school massacre, will not be released to the public after massive outcry over the product.

Active Shooter was originally scheduled for a June 6th release, but Valve has promised that's not going to happen.

Andrew Pollack, whose 18-year-old daughter, Meadow, was killed during the February 14 massacre at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, told the Miami Herald that the "sick people" behind the game were contributing to the desensitization to violence that ultimately claimed the life of his daughter.

Doug Lombardi, a spokesperson for Valve, told USA Today that it removed Revived Games and the game's publisher ACID from Steam.

Active Shooter was developed by Revived Games and published by Acid, both of which Valve said are a person named Ata Berdiyev.

"Ata is a troll, with a history of customer abuse, publishing copyrighted material, and user review manipulation", Valve said.

"The broader conversation about Steam's content policies is one that we'll be addressing soon", the Valve statement said. Still, the company's statement didn't exactly inspire trust.

Robinett, the woman who started the petition, celebrated the removal of the game as a victory for those willing to speak up. "I feel like they were trying to please everyone without actually saying that this is wrong and we won't have it on our site". Many peopled argued in favor of the developer, pointing out that other games such as Grand Theft Auto V and various World War II titles all put players in position of killing others, sometimes in cold blood as well. It's because of this controversy that Valve began looking into the game in the first place.

Revived Games and Acid didn't have any name recognition in the industry. According to the developer, adding the school shooter role was a natural progression of development.

Not everyone seems to share Siefe's concern or sense of outrage over "Active Shooter". In GTA V, for example, a player can pay a prostitute to have sex, then beat her to death and take back the money.

Valve has pulled games from Steam before - some because they were not original creations. The game received a whirlwind of press after the developer chose to add the option of playing as either the shooter or as a civilian attempting to survive a shooting event taking place in a school.
