Trump says June 12th summit is on

(LEAD) South Korea vows to faithfully implement summit agreement with NK

South Korean President Moon Jae In says he delivered President Trump's firm willingness to end hostile relations with North Korea and to offer economic assistance to the country if leader Kim Jong Un implements complete denuclearization.

Trump administration officials said they had been informed of the extraordinary two-hour meeting in advance, and indicated they remained open to a summit between Trump and Kim.

"Chairman Kim and I have agreed that the 12 June summit should be held successfully, and that our quest for the Korean peninsula's denuclearisation and a perpetual peace regime should not be halted", Moon said. Kim may see the sit-down with Trump as necessary to easing pressure from crushing sanctions and to winning security assurances in a region surrounded by enemies.

Donald Trump has said negotiations over a potential summit with the leader of North Korea are "going along very well".

Moon, who returned to Seoul on Thursday morning after meeting Trump in Washington in a bid to keep the high-stakes U.S.

In a letter released by the White House on Thursday, Trump said, "I was very much looking forward to being there with you".

Pyongyang's state-run KCNA news agency said Kim "expressed his fixed will on the historic DPRK-US summit talks", using the official abbreviation for North Korea. A White House team will travel to Singapore as earlier planned to continue preparations for the on-again, off-again Trump-Kim meeting.

It remains unclear whether Kim will ever agree to fully abandon his nuclear arsenal in return, despite Moon's insistence that Kim can be persuaded to abandon his nuclear facilities, materials and bombs in a verifiable and irreversible way in exchange for credible security and economic guarantees. He placed enormous stock in the showy demolition at the Punggye-ri nuclear test site, an operation viewed by nuclear experts as a theatrical production with limited relevance to permanently ending North Korea's nuclear weapons program, if not a scurrilous exercise in destroying criminal evidence. Washington has made it clear it wants to see the "complete, verifiable and irreversible denuclearisation" of the North.

On Saturday pictures showed Moon and Kim shaking hands and embracing on the North Korean side of the demilitarised zone separating the two nations.

He praised Kim for announcing a moratorium on nuclear and missile tests, as well as the closing of the country's nuclear test site this week. A top North Korean official later blasted the comments as "unlawful and outrageous".

The Saturday summit between Moon and Kim became the second time the two leaders met in less than two months, and it followed a groundbreaking meeting in April.

Saturday's summit marks the fourth meeting between the leaders of the two Koreas since they were divided at the end of the World War II in 1945.
