Ireland Votes To Lift Its Abortion Ban, Exit Polls Show

Billy Larkin said he would not be around if abortion was legal

"I'm the proudest person on the planet here for Ireland, I just am blown away by the fact that I can now stand tall and say that we are a progressive and a modern country and that we respect the rights of all people, regardless of what your beliefs are and your backgrounds are on this issue". As a result, thousands of Irish women make the trip overseas, often to England, to have an abortion.

Voters were asked whether they wanted to keep or repeal the Eighth Amendment to Ireland's Constitution, which requires authorities to treat a fetus and its mother as equals under the law.

Irish Prime Minister Leo Varadkar, a medical doctor who campaigned for ending the decades-old ban, hailed the result as a "quiet revolution".

Anti-abortion activist Cora Sherlock tweeted on Saturday evening that it was "a sad day for Ireland and for people who believe in genuine human rights". And unlike other parts of the United Kingdom, abortions are banned apart from when the life or mental health of the mother is in danger.

Varadkar said he'd like to pass legislation for a new abortion law by the end of the year, according to The Guardian.

Chants of "Yes we did" rose from the crowd as the Referendum Commission's Returning Officer Barry Ryan announced the final results.

John McGuirk, spokesman for the Save the 8th group - which refers to the eighth amendment in the constitution which effectively bans terminations - told Irish television Saturday that many Irish citizens will not recognize the country they are waking up in.

A predicted landslide vote in favour of overturning Ireland's abortion ban gives "hope" to Northern Ireland, UK minister Penny Mordaunt has said.

"The truth is not established by popular consensus", said Mark Hickey, who voted no, while observing the official ballot count.

While the Irish Government plans to bring in legislation by the end of the year, the referendum result will not affect Northern Ireland, where cases of rape, incest and fatal foetal abnormality are not considered grounds for a legal termination.

Ailbhe Smyth, a veteran campaigner and co-director of Together4Yes, the national pro-repeal group, is one of those women.

Exit polls from the Irish Times and broadcaster RTE had suggested the Irish people have voted by almost 70 percent to repeal the Eighth Amendment. People from all over the world celebrated on social media after the results came in Saturday morning, and people in Ireland flooded the streets.

"I feel safe now, I feel comfortable", she told CNN.

With 66pc of voters backing the Government's proposal to allow abortions in Ireland, Mr Varadkar said: "We have voted to look reality in the eye and we did not blink".

The support for lifting the ban highlights the liberalization of traditionally Catholic Ireland, marking the diminishing influence of the Church hierarchy and a desire to align Irish secular laws with the other countries of Europe.

"I want to reassure you that Ireland today is the same as it was last week, but more tolerant, open and respectful".
