2 hospitalized in Indiana middle school shooting, suspect in custody

2 Hospitalized Suspect in Custody Following Active Shooting Situation at Indiana Middle School

A student at an IN middle school was taken into custody Friday after one of his classmates and a teacher were wounded by gunfire, local officials said.

Seaman is being treated at IU Health Methodist.

Shots have been reported at a middle school in Noblesville, Indiana, a receptionist for the school district told CNN Friday. Both were taken to Indianapolis hospitals in critical condition.

The school has a full time school resource officer who was in the building at the time, Jowitt said.

Police have cleared the school and have investigated a threat at the nearby Noblesville High School, but law enforcement officials made clear that the situation at the high school is likely related to reports of the earlier shooting.

Many have taken to social media to comment on the shooting, with Indianapolis Mayor Joe Hogsett tweeting, "As the father of 3 kids, including a daughter in middle school, I know too well the terror every parent faces when they hear the news of yet another school shooting".

One student said he was in class taking a test when the suspect came in with a handgun and started shooting aimlessly, "waiving his hand around", reported ABC affiliate RTV in Indianapolis.

Parent Maria Roney, whose son is an eighth-grader, said even with seeing school shootings across the country, she never expected it to happen here.

No other details were immediately available.

Jowitt says the student was quickly taken into custody and didn't confirm accounts that the teacher tackled the shooter after he fired four to six shots.

"Two people have been impacted by this".

The school, Noblesville West Middle School, is on lockdown, Chatterton said.

Parents can also pick up their children at any of the other schools.

"Our hearts go out to the students, educators, families and community members of Noblesville who this morning faced a senseless act of gun violence at Noblesville West Middle School". The middle school has about 1,300 students from grades 6-8.

Indiana Governor Eric Holcomb, flying back from Europe, released a statement saying he was monitoring the situation.

"Well, my ex-wife called me and she was hysterical and couldn't even talk", he said.

"He's a hero. If he didn't do anything he probably would have continued shooting and a lot more of us would have been injured and possibly killed, so it was just something that not most people would have done but he was really courageous to do it", he said.

"Today an unfortunate shooting at a school has occurred in Indiana".
