Iran says 'sham' USA policy to reap 'ill rewards'

Mike Pompeo US Außenminister

Weeks after President Donald Trump pulled out of an worldwide nuclear deal with Iran, his administration threatened to impose "the strongest sanctions in history", and vowed to "crush" Iranian operatives overseas, setting Washington and Tehran further on a course of confrontation.

Pompeo called the Iran Nuclear Deal, which US President Donald Trump withdrew from two weeks ago, "bad for the United States, Europe, the Middle East, and indeed for the entire world".

"Anytime sanctions are put in place, countries have to give up economic activity", Pompeo said, adding that US companies have sacrificed business opportunities.

This new list of demands and Washington's increasingly hostile rhetoric will undoubtedly result in another escalation of attacks against Rouhani.

President Donald Trump has long said the 2015 deal with Iran - also signed by Britain, China, France, Germany and Russian Federation - did not go far enough, and now wants the Europeans and others to support his hardline strategy.

"I think if you try now to fold all those issues - the ballistic missiles, Iran's misbehaviour, Iran's disruptive activity in the region and the nuclear question - if you try to fold all those into a giant negotiation, a new jumbo Iran negotiation, a new treaty - that's what seems to be envisaged - I don't see that being very easy to achieve, in anything like a reasonable timetable", Johnson told journalists in Argentina.

And he also strongly hinted that the Iranian people ought to overthrow their leaders. In that crisis, the administration says it won't accept a strategy of synchronized, step-by-step concessions in exchange for North Korea gradually giving into demands to give up its nuclear program.

"Do the Americans think that the silk glove that they've taken out and the iron hand that they've extended to the people, a hand that's backed by Israel and the [Mujahedeen-e-Khalq organization], will make Iranian people think that America wants democracy?" Now Washington's European allies want to stick with the existing deal.

Is the U.S. on its own? "Well, the honourable officials made serious efforts; they sweated profusely over it, but they failed", he said.

Iran was deemed in compliance of the JCPOA, including by the Trump administration.

Pompeo was defiant in his speech, reciting a litany of Iranian behaviors that have vexed American leaders for decades. He also demanded Iran end support for other militant groups, including Hezbollah in Lebanon, Hamas in the Gaza Strip, and the Palestinian Islamic Jihad. "You just have to ask, how are you going to get overwhelming pressure on Iran to submit to this radical all-encompassing set of requirements if your sanctions coverage is pretty patchy?" explained a senior European diplomat, who was granted anonymity to speak frankly.

Speaking to the Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting (IRIB), Chief of the Iranian Judiciary's Human Rights Council Mohammad Javad Larijani criticized President Hassan Rouhani's remarks about the continuation of the JCPOA after Washington's move to leave the agreement.

Pompeo vowed that Trump's approach would ensure "Iran has no possible path to a nuclear weapon, ever". Tasnim News, a news outlet close to the IRGC, has recently published articles suggesting an escalation in Yemen against Saudi Arabia and in Syria against Israel. Netanyahu called for other countries to follow America's lead.

Iran, by contrast, was bringing "stabilizing and anti-terrorism measures" to the region and to the world.

"The West often treats President Rouhani and Foreign Minister Zarif as "apart" from the regime's unwise, terrorist, and malign behaviours", Pompeo said, speaking directly to the Iranian people.

Pompeo essentially demanded Iran's total submission without offering anything in return aside from the hazy prospect of sanctions relief at some future date.
