US Senate confirms Haspel to be first woman Central Intelligence Agency director

Gina Haspel the veteran covert agent whose nomination as director of the Central Intelligence Agency was approved by the Senate

Despite opposition from three Republicans, she won the position with a vote of 51-43, after gaining the votes of six key Democrats. Mark Warner (D-Va.), the vice chairman of the Intelligence Committee, Sen.

One suspect that was brought there, Abd al-Rahim al-Nashiri, was brutalised using methods that were later banned by President Barack Obama.

Senator Ron Wyden of OR deserves our thanks for helping to lead the charge against Haspel's confirmation. John McCain (R-AZ), who is home receiving treatment for brain cancer, was not able to vote.

He had earlier said that Haspel is "one step closer to lead fearless men and women at the CIA". He asked how the Senate could take seriously Haspel's "conversion on torture?".

Ms. Haspel formally replaces Mike Pompeo as CIA director and will be the first career clandestine service officer to oversee the agency since Richard Helms in the 1960s and William Colby in the 1970s.

Among Democrats supporting Haspel are several who are up for re-election this fall in states where Trump is popular, including Sen. "I believe the Senate should exercise its duty of advice and consent and reject this nomination". He said he worked closely with Haspel for almost seven years - until his retirement from the agency in 2013.

"Ms Haspel played a central role in the CIAs Rendition, Detention and Interrogation program".

Haspel, 61, has been said to be a controversial pick for the post due to her involvement in the 26/11 attacks investigation. He was also subjected to torture during five plus years he spent as a prisoner of war in Vietnam. As Heitkamp put it, "Haspel explained to me that the agency should not have employed such tactics in the past and has assured me that it will not do so in the future".

Human rights groups were quick to criticize Haspel and political leaders. Republican Sen. Jeff Flake, McCain's Arizona colleague, has said he's undecided.

As acting CIA director, Haspel held final say over what information the agency chose to declassify about her record. Jeanne Shaheen of New Hampshire.

After decades of service, Haspel was sworn in as the CIA's deputy director on February 7, 2017, becoming the first woman to hold the position.

The U.S. Senate has approved Gina Haspel to be director of the CIA, despite her role in the spy agency's past use of brutal interrogation techniques. "Seeing her portrait in the halls of the agency next to the long line of former directors will be a long overdue but important breakthrough for the intelligence community". They can also carry on the tradition of destabilizing countries and meddling in elections to advance the agenda of American empire. She said she welcomed Haspel's recognition that the interrogation program "harmed our nation's moral leadership and her pledge that it will never be used again".
