Senate votes to reinstate net neutrality

US net neutrality vote net nuetrality repeal US Senate vote net neutrality FCC rules Federal Communications Commission internet service providers tech companies internet traffic Congress vote

Both of Maine's US senators have joined a majority of their colleagues by voting to block a Federal Communications Commission (FCC) plan to repeal net neutrality rules.

Though the Senate vote to repeal will most likely be made moot by the house the Coalition of Internet Voters made a strong show of support as Sen.

Pai says the Democrats and the three Republicans who voted with them used "scare tactics" in their opposition to his regulations and that his "light touch approach will deliver better, faster and cheaper internet access and more broadband competition to the American people - something that millions of consumers desperately want and something that should be a top priority".

The Senate has approved a plan that would prevent the Federal Communications Commission from overturning the net neutrality rules the agency put into place in 2015.

The Senate yesterday voted 52-47 to reverse the FCC repeal of net neutrality rules.

Kull is more skeptical that net neutrality will be a potent voter motivator this year unless people start to see changes to their Internet costs, speed or access. The bill will now move to the House of Representatives, where House Democrats must collect signatures from a full majority of the House-instead of just 30-to use the CRA and bring the issue up for vote.

Wednesday's vote is only the latest installment in a almost decade-long battle regarding how the government should regulate internet. The FCC repealed the Obama-era net neutrality policy last December.

Sen. John Thune, R-S.D., called it a "highly politicized campaign" that was filled with "fear-mongering hypotheticals, misdirection and outright false claims".

Prior to the vote Senator Hassan spoke on the floor of the Senate, reinforcing the importance of protecting a free and open internet so that all hard-working Granite Staters and businesses across the country can thrive.

After the FCC's decision, big tech companies like Foursquare, Etsy, Expa, Shutterstock, Kickstarter, and Automattic have said they would challenge the FCC's ruling in court.

"The grandparents, the gamers, the gearheads, the geeks, the GIF-makers, the Generations X, Y, and Z. This movement to save net neutrality is made up of every walk of American life", he said. We pay our ISPs plenty of money for internet access, they shouldn't have the ability to block or throttle any application or website we choose to use or visit. BGR spoke to Senator Schatz to get his thoughts on the vote, and where net neutrality goes from here.

"I have consistently stated to Alaskans that I strongly support preserving a free and open internet - and believe that keeping the internet affordable and accessible to all consumers is an essential principle in internet governance", Sullivan said in a statement. "Eighty two percent of Republicans support the net neutrality protections and oppose the FCC's recent decision to take those away", Karr said.

The FCC's Restoring Internet Freedom Order reversing open-internet rules is scheduled to take effect June 11. Net neutrality also is essential to the hundreds of thousands of union members who earn a living creating the content we all stream over the internet.

"We've turned net neutrality into a mainstream issue for the first time ever", declared Fight for the Future in their explainer.
