Facebook suspends 200 apps over possible data misuse

Facebook is suspending about 200 apps it believes may have misused data

Facebook was struck by the privacy scandal in March 2018 after it was reported that Cambridge Analytica improperly accessed data on up to 87 million Facebook users without their explicit consent. A first of its kind in the market, the program provides financial payouts to anyone who reports genuine cases of data collection that go against Facebook's data policies.

Researchers from the University of Cambridge distributed the data gathered by the Facebook personality app myPersonality to hundreds of other researchers through a website without enough security provisions.

Facebook is especially focused on apps operating in 2014 or earlier. According to a recent article in 9to5mac.com, Apple is now removing those apps from the app store that are sharing data in violation of these restrictions. The data of these users profiles was not only shared with the Cambridge researchers, the data was available to anyone wanting to access it.

But these 280 people or collaborators weren't alone in having access to data of almost 3 million users.

The social network will be conducting a "thorough investigation" to check whether these apps have misused user data or not.

Anyone who wanted access to the data set could have found the key to download it in less than a minute.

Reports further claim that third-party apps can easily view app scores of 3.1 million people used this app and their personal details are now within an open-door reach. While this is yet another problem for Facebook that is already trying to deal with an eerily similar Cambridge Analytica data misuse scandal, no one over at Facebook HQ is going to lose their sleep since they are making more money than ever.

"As a result, it has been determined that it is no longer viable to continue operating the business, which left Cambridge Analytica with no realistic alternative to placing the Company into administration", the statement read. As the company finds evidence of data breaches, users can log in to a help page to see if their own data was mishandled.

Mark Zuckerberg has once again rejected the advances of the United Kingdom parliamentary committee that are probing the misuse of Facebook data and how the firm slurps user info.
