David Goodall: Scientist, 104, ends his life in Switzerland

Precious time Dr Goodall speaks to his grandchildren and their partners about some of the plants displayed in the gardens

"I'm happy to have the chance tomorrow to end it".

(AAP) Prof. Goodall travelled to Switzerland to end his life, where euthanasia is legal.

In an interview Tuesday with The Associated Press just two days before he plans to take advantage of Switzerland's assisted-suicide laws, David Goodall spoke of his determination to end his life.

Assisted suicide was supposed to be meant for people who have lethal medical conditions or are in significant pain but Goodall's case is another example of how healthy people are killing themselves.

For his family back in Perth, who said their goodbyes when Dr Goodall flew out last week, the finality of his decision was one they had been given time to come to terms with.

Sky's Michelle Clifford said she could hear Beethoven's 9th Symphony coming from the room where he was being helped to die.

Goodall arrived in Switzerland on May 7, after visiting relatives in the French city of Bordeaux.

Exit International, which represented the scientist, said Goodall passed away while listening to Beethoven's "Ode to Joy".

'My feeling is that an old person like myself should have full citizenship rights including the right of assisted suicide'.

In the United States, only six states - California, Colorado, Hawaii, Oregon, Vermont and Washington state - and Washington, D.C., have death-with-dignity laws for terminally ill patients.

Goodall was born 4 April 1914 in London, and in 1948 moved to Australia. The family is scattered around the world.

Goodall said he has had a good life, but that in recent years, his health has declined.

Dr Goodall will be taken to an undisclosed location as he dies at 9am, but he has not chosen a special last meal, he revealed.

He has chosen to end his life in Switzerland since Australia now does not permit medically assisted suicide.

Exit International director Philip Nitschke says "there is a growing generation of older people who are living longer than ever before, who are not ill, and who are demanding end of life choices".

Nitschke said Goodall had asked for his body to be used for medical research or, if that request was refused, for it to be cremated and the ashes dispersed locally.

On Thursday, he received a fatal dose of a barbiturate intravenously. A doctor put a cannula in his arm, and Goodall turned a wheel to allow the solution to flow, Exit International said.

Stewart says more than 30 Australians have made the trip to Switzerland since the 1998 foundation of Dignitas in Zurich. During this time he became highly influential in the development of quantitative ecology.

His final news conference Wednesday was aimed at drawing attention to his desire to end his life in hopes that countries such as Australia change laws to be more accepting of assisted suicide.

Switzerland is one of the world's most permissive countries when it comes to assisted suicide.

The story of the academic, who is one of the first Australians to undertake the procedure due to old age rather than a terminal illness, attracted global headlines and further inflamed a highly divisive debate.
