Pompeo sees 'real opportunity' to denuclearize North Korea

Things 'going very well': Trump on talks with SKorea leader

Kim told Moon that the Punggye-ri test site is in a good shape, rebutting the contention by some media that North Korea would close the already collapsed nuclear test site.

And the effort got a nonpartisan push Monday from South Korean President Moon Jae-in, who responded to talk of his own potential Nobel by saying it should go to Trump instead.

"Although I am inherently resistant toward America, people will see that I am not the kind of person who fires nukes at South Korea, the Pacific or America", Kim said during the summit, Yoon told reporters in Seoul.

According to a summit accord, Kim and Moon agreed to achieve "a nuclear-free Korean Peninsula through complete denuclearization", rather than clearly stating "a nuclear-free North Korea".

The office also said North Korea would change its time zone - now half an hour different - to match that of the South.

It could buy Kim Jong-un "desperately needed relief from economic sanctions" even while shutting down his nuclear arsenal, including the "right to demand withdrawal of USA support from North Korea".

South Korea says it will remove propaganda-broadcasting loudspeakers from the border with North Korea. Much hinges on Kim's upcoming summit with Trump, who said it could happen in the next three to four weeks.

At a White House news conference with German Chancellor Angela Merkel on Friday, Trump basked in the afterglow of the meeting between Kim and Moon, and said he has a responsibility to try to achieve peace and denuclearization.

Mr. Pompeo, the former Central Intelligence Agency director who was sworn in as the top US diplomat on Thursday, said his meeting with Mr. Kim was "a productive one" and that he left Pyongyang convinced there is "a real opportunity" for the North Korean leader and Mr. Trump to strike a deal.

If he were to preside over the verifiable destruction of the North's nuclear and missile programs, formally end the 1950-53 Korean War and usher in the destruction of the world's last Cold War-era frontier, Trump would claim a feat that has eluded all of his most recent predecessors.

"In terms of his traveling anywhere, it would not be a problem - the South Koreans or the Swedes would give him a ride", Victor Cha, a Korea analyst for MSNBC, told The Post.

"At the talks both sides had a candid and open-hearted exchange of views on the matters of mutual concern including the issues of improving the North-South relations, ensuring peace on the Korean Peninsula and the denuclearisation of the peninsula", KCNA said. "Just asking!" the US President tweeted.

"I believe that one of the reasons that Kim Jong-un is engaged in this conversation is that the pressure campaign that has been applied by President Trump, and indeed by the world, has put them in an even more tenuous, more hard position".

"President Trump should win the Nobel Peace Prize", Moon reportedly told a group of aides.

"I don't think he's ever had this enthusiasm for somebody, for them wanting to make a deal", Trump said in the Oval Office.

Pompeo said that the United States also will have to match North Korea's actions, although he provided no details.

Republican and Democratic lawmakers credited Trump's strategy for Kim's readiness to negotiate.

Bolton says on CBS' "Face the Nation" that "we've heard this before".

Keeping diplomatic developments coming at a head-snapping pace, the South Korean government said on Sunday that North Korea's leader, Kim Jong-un, had told President Moon Jae-in that he would abandon his nuclear weapons if the U.S. agreed to formally end the Korean War and promise not to invade his country.

Trump spoke about the meeting hours after using his Twitter feed Monday to ask followers whether he should meet the nuclear-armed leader at the DMZ, the demilitarized zone that separates North and South Korea.
