Guentzel, Penguins Win to End Flyers Season in Game 6

Evgeni Malkin

The Penguins now await the victor of the first-round series between the Washington Capitals and Columbus Blue Jackets. That created a 2-on-0 and Kessel fed Guentzel for the slam dunk into an empty net, giving the Penguins a 5-4 lead with his second of the game. They use systems of play that they have been planning all season to get the slightest advantage against their opponents.

Philadelphia didn't get even close to good goaltending in this series and that is arguably the biggest reason why they lost this series.

"He gave us a chance to win that game", said Claude Giroux, who had just one goal and was a minus-10 in the series.

Ironically, it was a fast start at the Wells Fargo Center for the Flyers.

Couturier opened the scoring in Game 6 with a goal just 2:15 into the first period, then scored early again - at the 0:40 mark of the second period - to push the Flyers back into the lead at 3-2.

"Today we let a two-goal lead slip", Couturier said. "We came in to win the series".

Couturier finished Philadelphia's brief postseason with 9 points (5 goals, 4 assists) in the five games he played.

Mistakes that injected some actual tension into a series devoid of it coming in.

As the story goes, Sean Couturier's status for Game 5 on Friday was in serious doubt because of a knee injury he suffered in practice the day before. Washington is up 3 games to 2. In Neuvirth's first start in the series, he made 30 saves and would seem the likely starter Sunday. Then Guentzel tied it at 4-4, poking the puck past Flyers goalie Michal Neuvirth with 53.9 seconds left.

It was a unusual series in that the home team lost five straight in a Flyers series for just the second time (the other was the first five games of the 1995 conference finals, a 4-2 loss to the Devils).

Philadelphia was going to have to win the high-end talent battle to win this series and they couldn't match Pittsburgh's. "Now we've just got to figure out how to play at home".

The total has gone over in 11 of the Penguins' last 13 road games.

A little more than midway through the second period, the Flyers took a 4-2 lead and the Philly faithful was really into it, thinking there could be a Game 7 on Tuesday night in Pittsburgh. "It's got to be our best game".
