Nawaz, Maryam to leave for London today

LHC bars Pemra from airing anti-judiciary content

Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) supremo Nawaz Sharif on today (Apr. 17) said the court should make clear what "anti-judiciary" means, adding that everyone has the right to dissent.

Former prime minister Nawaz Sharif will leave for London Wednesday to inquire about the health of his wife Begum Kulsoom Nawaz who is undergoing cancer of the lymph nodes since previous year.

A three-member Lahore High Court bench headed by Justice Mazahir Ali Naqvi also directed Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) to decide all pending complaints regarding the alleged contemptuous speeches within 15 days and devise a framework. "The judiciary will also monitor content on channels to ensure no violations occur", the court ruled.

Sharif called for an end to muzzling media and individuals.

"The judge authored the order against Nawaz Sharif allowing no chance of defence", the application filed by Dogar read.

The petitioners pleaded with the court to initiate contempt of court proceedings against Sharif and his daughter and restrain them from maligning the judiciary.

The Supreme Court, however, dismissed multiple contempt of court petitions against the ousted prime minister last month, saying on one occasion: "Commenting cleanly on a [court] decision is the right of every citizen".

"Elected governments made historic decisions, including the atomic tests which were completely conducted by the civilian government", claimed Nawaz.

The political future of Mr. Sharif, who leads the country's most powerful political family and his party (PML-N), has been hanging in the balance since then.
