Mike Pence meets Venezuelan opposition ahead of summit

Cuban denounces in Lima forum

Trudeau's trip to Peru is focused on drumming up investment in Canada and the prime minister is expected to play the role of salesman-in-chief by addressing participants of the III CEO Summit of the Americas "Invest in Canada" session, PMO officials said.

Pence said in a meeting Friday with Venezuelan opposition leaders in Lima, Peru, that "we are with you to see freedom once again".

Quoted by the Bolivian Agency of Information, Alessandri indicated such assertion is appreciated this year with an interfering attitude shown by the exclusion of Venezuela to the eighth edition of the Summit, for having a democratic government elected by the people's will.

With the White House's encouragement, Maduro has been barred from the summit over his plans to hold a presidential election that the opposition is boycotting and that many foreign governments consider a sham.

According to the US State Department, the United States is providing $16 million in extra funding for humanitarian assistance for Venezuelans who have fled as economic conditions worsen. He says, "We want one message to be clear: We are with the people of Venezuela".

"We want one message to be clear: We are with the people of Venezuela", Pence said at the USA ambassador's residence, seated with a group of Venezuelan opposition leaders.

U.S. Vice President Mike Pence was at his hotel in Lima, Peru, when President Donald Trump announced retaliatory airstrikes in Syria for an apparent chemical weapon attack there last weekend. Although Castro never officially confirmed he would attend the summit, there were high expectations he would show to bid farewell to regional leaders as he prepares to step down in a week's time from the presidency.

President Donald Trump has partially rolled back former President Barack Obama's diplomatic opening with the communist island. It said Friday that they will discuss U.S-Mexico relations. He'll also discuss the influence of Chinese trade in the region. After the US pulled out, 11 countries reached a revised deal last month that dropped some clauses that had been meant to benefit the United States. That adds further tensions as the neighbors, along with Canada, work to renegotiate the North American Free Trade Agreement. Pence's meeting with Pena Nieto will follow Trump's calls to send National Guard troops to the border.

Agen says Pence was unable to reach Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer before the speech but planned to speak to him afterward. The letter blames those policies for declining support for the U.S.in the region at a time China and Russian Federation are making important inroads.

A copy of the letter was provided to The Associated Press.
