Russia's Putin Urges Netanyahu Not to Destabilize Syria Any Further

Putin, Netanyahu speak, discuss Syria

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Wednesday warned Iran not to launch a retaliatory attack against Israel after Tehran accused Tel Aviv of carrying out an airstrike on a Syrian airbase.

The statement said Putin "underscored the principal importance of observing the sovereignty of Syria and called for holding back from any actions that would further destabilize the situation in this country and present threats to its security".

The statement by Netanyahu comes just days after Israel purportedly carried out an airstrike against a Syrian military base where Iran is also operating.

"Upon an initiative of the Israeli side, a telephone conversation took place between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu".

The attack left 14 people dead, including seven Iranian soldiers.

On Tuesday, an Iranian official said the airstrike would "not remain without a response", according to Lebanese news channel Al Mayadeen.

Israel is believed to have carried out numerous raids inside Syria since 2013.

Russian and Iranian forces, as well as fighters from Hizballah, are reported to have had a presence at the T-4 base in Homs that was struck on Monday.

Russian Federation is the biggest ally of Syrian leader Bashar al-Assad's regime and warned against strikes, notably by the United States in reprisal for an alleged chemical attack against rebel-held Douma that has sparked global outrage and "could destabilise the already fragile situation in the region", the Kremlin said yesterday.
