Steve Wozniak shuts down his Facebook account in protest

Co-Founder of Apple Steve Wozniak

Wozniak said that the social networking giant has brought more negatives to him rather than positives. "I can still deal with old school email and text messages". In response, a significant public backlash has risen, with many people deleting their Facebook accounts and leaving the service. "Playboy' has deactivated its Facebook accounts amid the backlash". But, Wozniak confirmed the same in an email to USA Today.

According to a report in USA Today, "Woz" has become the latest member of the #DeleteFacebook movement. He added that Apple reviews apps to confirm that each one meets the privacy standards his company has required for users. But Wozniak is highly technical, and has previously made it clear that he's aware that Facebook and Google use his data for advertising, and that he doesn't like it. He is looking to retain the stevewoz handle and does not want anyone else to start using it.

With Facebook facing user boycotts and a congressional inquiry over revelations that a political firm improperly obtained personal data from millions of the social network's users, Apple CEO Tim Cook was asked what he would do if he were in Mark Zuckerberg's shoes.

"I wouldn't be in the situation", said Cook, who previously called for regulations on Facebook.

Wozniak said Apple Inc., based in Cupertino, California, has systems and policies that in many cases allow people to choose whether to share certain data.

Facebook's CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, is scheduled to testify to Congress about privacy issues tomorrow, April 10.

"It should bother us just how much data they'd access to, for example profile info people feel is private", Wozniak composed in a contact to CNNMoney. Last month, Tesla CEO Elon Musk deleted Facebook pages for Tesla, SolarCity and SpaceX.

Several other high-profile users have removed themselves from the network completely, joining the #DeleteFacebook movement, including US technology entrepreneur Elon Musk's accounts for his firms Tesla and Space X, singer Cher and actor Will Ferrell. How could Facebook continue to earn money while also protecting users' privacy?
