Kim Jong Un Claims He Will Relinquish Nuclear Weapons for Regime Guarantee

N. Korea OKs talks on nukes

Talks have been taking place between the U.S. and North Korean officials in anticipation of a summit between Donald Trump and Kim Jong-un.

Amid a rapidly moving diplomatic rapprochement on the Korean peninsula, Mr Kim will meet Moon Jae-in, the South Korean president, on the highly militarised border separating the two countries on April 27.

North Korea's parliament, the Supreme People's Assembly, is scheduled to convene on Wednesday.

The news was confirmed when North Korea has shown their willingness to discuss the issue.

The North had remained publicly silent for weeks after its leader's invitation to talks was first delivered to Trump by South Korean officials.

Mr Kim's remarks on Monday did not specifically refer to a summit with Mr Trump.

The confirmation follows what seems to be weeks of backchannel diplomatic efforts between the United States and the North Korean government, with the USA effort being led primarily by the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA).

Kim Dong-yub, a professor at the Institute for Far Eastern Studies (IFES) at Kyungnam University, said that Pyongyang and Washington held very different views on the upcoming talks.

North Korea's government has communicated with the United States to say that leader Kim Jong Un is ready to discuss his nuclear weapons program, increasing the likelihood that the unprecedented summit will actually occur.

After yesterday's announcement the Asian country were willing to get rid of their nuclear weapons, Trump said on Twitter: "For years and through many administrations, everyone said that peace and the denuclearisation of the Korean Peninsula was not even a small possibility".

Last year, an increasingly bellicose North Korea declared that it had a "state nuclear force", and now finds itself under some of the strictest sanctions ever imposed by the United Nations because of its nuclear and missile tests.

The meeting will be the third summit between the two Koreas.

A South Korean envoy risked the wrath of Kim Jong Un by telling him to kick his smoking habit during landmark talks, according to reports.

White House officials have not said where the Trump-Kim summit will be held.
