Ferrari's Raikkonen tops timesheets in final Bahrain GP practice

Ferrari fined €50 000 after F1 mechanic injured

However, thanks to some key steps made to improve his feel of the auto, Vettel says that getting on top of the balance helped things "come alive" to deliver an all Ferrari front row.

"I need a little bit more confidence with the auto, which is not where we want it to be yet", Vettel said.

Raikkonen and Vettel confirmed the pace Ferrari have demonstrated over one lap so far this weekend by topping the timing charts in Q1, with the duo able to get through using the soft tyre - the middle compound available in Bahrain - and requiring just one flying lap.

"Not ideal - far from ideal in the last run with the traffic", said Raikkonen, the 2007 champion.

It is Ferrari's first pole position in Bahrain since 2007 when Brazilian Felipe Massa turned it into a victory ahead of then-rookie Hamilton, stated the report. Hamilton probably would have taken third spot but got hampered by Kevin Magnussen on Turn 14.

The four-time world champion led a Scuderia one-two from Kimi Raikkonen and finished nearly two tenths of a second ahead of Valtteri Bottas in the lead Mercedes.

"The red cars were too quick so we're not happy with that", Bottas said.

The Red Bull driver set a time quick enough to get him through to Q2 but was unable to continue.

Having topped FP2 as Ferrari enjoyed a comfortable advantage on Friday, Raikkonen remained fastest in FP3 and his lap time of 1m29.868s left him a full 0.525s ahead of the Red Bull pair of Max Verstappen and Daniel Ricciardo.

"But I will give it all I can".

"It was a bit unfortunate", Verstappen said of the crash. "Like I said it's a new vehicle, there are certain new designs on it, it could be good or not, but there's not one particular thing that suddenly made it better for me than in the other years".

"We are struggling a little bit with overheating issues with the tyres, less so in the evening sessions, but still we have work to do".

The driver of the day arguably belonged to Toro Rosso's Pierre Gasly who managed to finish as the best of the rest in sixth and Hamilton's penalty will mean he jumps up to fifth.

Nico Hulkenberg was eighth for Renault ahead of Force India's Esteban Ocon and teammate Carlos Sainz.

Last year's pole-sitter Valtteri Bottas, who crashed out of qualifying in Australia, led the German marque's charge in third.

Lando Norris claimed pole position on Friday night as he shone brightly under the stars in the FIA Formula 2 Championship's season-opening qualifying run. "I will try and eek out every last bit of power and strength from this auto".
