Apple Developing iPhone With Curved Display

Review: 2018 iPad with Apple Pencil support might replace your iPad Pro

People familiar with Apple's plans told Bloomberg Technology Wednesday that the Cupertino giant is developing curved iPhone displays and a new type of technology that would make it possible for users to control an iPhone with touchless gestures.

Instead of curving outwards towards the edges of the phone, Apple is considering displays that have a concave curvature that slowly dips towards the center from the top and bottom.

Apple is also looking at ways that could let iPhone users interact with their phones without touching them, the Bloomberg report also notes. iPhone users could potentially make gestures above their phones near the display for certain controls.

Apple did not immediately respond to PCMag's request for comment.

The iPhone X, which was released past year. A curved iPhone may be as little as two to three years away, the person said. The company is said to be working on these new projects in hopes of making its smartphones stand out in a sea of competition.

Samsung offered similar gesture controls, dubbed Air Gestures, on its Galaxy S4 smartphone years ago. It's the first iPhone from the company that doesn't feature a physical home button and has a display notch.

Last year, the company introduced its brand-new design strategy with the iPhone X and, unsurprisingly, this year's models are expected to follow in its footsteps.

Apple is preparing something new for its future iPhones. The feature would be based on technology built into the display itself rather than via a motion sensor on the phone's bezel, like with Samsung's implementation, the person explained. Also in the works alongside the new displays is a new gesture control feature. The upcoming OLED iPhone is said to have a larger 6.5-inch display than the 5.8-inch iPhone X.
