Russian Federation announces earlier delivery of S-400 missile systems to Turkey

Putin attends groundbreaking ceremony for Turkey's first nuclear power plant

The two-day trip to Turkey is Putin's first visit to a foreign country since he was reelected last month, and will also include talks with Iran's Hassan Rouhani on Syria. We made an agreement about the S-400s [with Russia] and this issue is now closed, ' he said.

'In the name of God!' Erdogan said standing next to Putin at the presidential palace in Ankara before fireworks launched to mark the event.

Erdogan told the news conference Turkey may cooperate with Russian Federation on defense projects besides the S-400 missile defense system which Moscow has agreed to supply to Ankara.

The sides were expected to discuss economic issues, the implementation of strategic projects such as the Akkuyu nuclear power plant as well as the delivery of Russian S-400 air defense systems to Turkey.

The warming relations between the two countries stand in contrast to the souring relations between Russia and the West over the poisoning in Britain of a Russian ex-spy.

"Just because some countries took a step based on an allegation, we don't have to take the same step", Erdogan said.

This will be the first such object to be built in Turkey.

"If you can deal with them, deal with them, or we will come to Sinjar and we will do it", he added.

The plant, comprising four units, each with a capacity of 1,200 megawatts, will be built by the Russian State Nuclear Energy Agency, Rosatom.

"We have established excellent connections with T·rkiye Wealth Fund and hope to announce important joint projects in the near future", Kirill Dmitriev, CEO of RDIF, said as quoted by the press release. Turkish President noted in his Twitter account that that was about a grandiose project worth $20 billion.

Turkey and Russian Federation have forged burgeoning ties in recent months on a number of areas including energy as well as the Syrian crisis, despite differences on key policy areas. Mr Putin and Mr Erdogan have met several times in the past year and regularly speak on the phone. The three countries are sponsoring a series of efforts in a bid to end the seven-year war. Turkey backs the opposition Free Syrian Army (FSA).
