Queen's husband Prince Philip hospitalized for hip surgery

The Duke of Edinburgh admitted to hospital for surgery

The surgery will take place tomorrow at the King Edward VII Hospital in Marylebone.

The Duke of Edinburgh has been admitted to hospital for surgery on his hip.

Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh, has been hospitalised for a pre-scheduled surgery of his hip, the Buckingham Palace said in a statement on Tuesday.

Details of the duke's condition, or which joint is causing the issue, have not been released by Buckingham Palace but the late Queen Mother underwent two successful hip operations in the 1990s, first when aged 95 then later when she was 97.

Prince Philip was also absent at Easter services with the Queen on Sunday at St. George's Chapel, which is the venue for Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's wedding in May. "He's not called the Iron Duke for nothing", they added, according to the Daily Express.

Philip retired from public life previous year but has since appeared several times at royal engagements alongside the queen. "That's more important than someone's chronological age".

King Edward VII is the private hospital of choice for the royal family and has been treating members of the monarchy for decades.

Prince Philip has suffered from heart disease and other ailments in recent years, but has generally remained in good health.

He did not attend a church service last week attended by the monarch because of a hip problem, a royal source said last week.

Even into his 90s, his remarks have gotten him into trouble, such as when he exasperatedly swore at a photographer at an event in 2015, ordering him to get a move on with an expletive.

Born in Greece in 1921, Philip was a child of the House of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glücksburg, a Greek-Danish royal family.
