Ian Poulter in Contention at Houston Open, Keeping Masters Hopes Alive

Padraig Harrington is off to a strong start in Houston

Poulter carded a five-under 67 and defeated Beau Hossler in the first playoff hole to win the 2018 Houston Open in Humble, Texas.

The two returned to the 18th hole to begin the sudden death playoff, and Poulter drove it in the fairway while Hossler put his ball in a fairway bunker.

Poulter then kept his cool and two-putted for par to secure victory.

That not only earned Poulter his first stroke play victory on USA soil - at the 241st attempt - it also earned him the golden ticket to Augusta reserved for the victor. Only 12 of the past 1,403 winners on the PGA Tour dating back to 1983 were 100th or worse after the first round.

Poulter sank a 20-foot birdie putt at the last hole to force the playoff.

"I guess I should never listen to other people", Poulter said. Poulter, 42, closed with a 5-under 67 for his third PGA Tour win and second in the United States.

"It is unbelievable, to get this done today to get me to Augusta is fantastic", Poulter told Sky Sports.

Just last week, towards the end of the WGC Match Play, Poulter was told he had earned himself a spot in the Masters when in fact he had not.

Former world number one Jordan Spieth made a Sunday rally, shooting a six-under 66 to finish tied for third, with Emiliano Grillo at 16 under. He shot 73 and was five shots back.

Both players parred Nos.

Poor Beau Hossler did not know what had hit him, although if the young American wanted to know he need only ask any of his countrymen who played in the 2012 Ryder Cup. It was only the sixth birdie on the 18th hole all day.

"I didn't play my best stuff". Martin Kaymer is playing for the first time since Riviera because of an injury.

"This one's for Katie, my wife", Poulter said.

"It's been a rollercoaster the last couple of years to be honest, to be down where I was has been tough". "She's the reason I'm here". Jennifer Song dropped out with a par on the third extra hole, and Park and Lindberg made a decision to play one more hole in fading light.

That sort of putting wins Green Jackets, not just warm-up events.

Defending champion Russell Henley finished strongly with a 65 to claim a share of eighth place on 13 under.
