Department of Justice sues California over land transfer law

Trump administration steps up war with California over environmental protections

The U.S. Department of Justice sued California on Monday over a law allowing the state to block the U.S. government from selling federal land. Federal law gives the authority to federal agencies.

The law was part of a series of bills California lawmakers passed past year in a bid to preserve federal environmental regulations under state law and protect federal lands from being sold to oil companies. "And yet, once again, the California legislature has enacted an extreme state law attempting to frustrate federal policy".

"A small number of extremist lawmakers in the West have been arguing that the USA government has an obligation to dispose of US public lands into state and private hands".

"We've got a different outlook here, and you know, look, I think that Jeff Sessions, of all people, should know the value of allowing states with different perspectives to do things the way they want to do things, within reason", Allen said.

The lawsuit, filed in federal court in the Eastern District of California, alleges the state's law violates the Constitution and should be blocked.

Monday's legal salvos were the latest in a series of showdowns over numerous USA initiatives, particularly on immigration and the environment, that clash with California's more liberal policies.

"This is another example of California ignoring federal laws", he added. "California was admitted to the Union upon the express condition that it would never interfere with the disposal of federal law".

"Safeguarding public lands is in our DNA as Californians-so much so that we have enshrined the principle in our state Constitution", he said.

Last fall, we featured California reporter Katy Grimes' book, California's War Against Trump, which chronicled the regulatory and legal volleys that the state's politicians has lobbed against President Trump since the day of his historic election.

The latest Justice litigation helps bolster Trump's standing with GOP lawmakers in Utah, Wyoming, Idaho and other western states who have long complained about excessive federal landholdings in their states.

Environmentalists in the state are incensed over a previous presidential order directing the Bureau of Land Management to consider changes to protections for the state's deserts.

"The Trump Administration's assault on clean auto standards risks our ability to protect our children's health, tackle climate change, and save hardworking Americans money", Becerra said in a statement.

After weeks of speculation, EPA Administrator Scott Pruitt on Monday confirmed that it would revoke Obama-era fuel-economy rules aimed at pressing automakers to manufacture cleaner cars and SUVs.

California officials assert they have the authority to implement the state legislation because they wouldn't be preventing sales of the land.

"This cynical and meretricious abuse of power will poison our air and jeopardize the health of all Americans", he tweeted. "Federal law is the supreme law of the land". Brown for pardoning five illegal immigrants who are facing possible deportation.

Trump lambasted Brown, referring to him as "Gov".

Last week, Becerra launched a lawsuit challenging the Trump administration's decision to include a citizenship question on the 2020 Census.

Trump also recently took aim at California Gov.
