Final Four: Sister Jean and Loyola-Chicago run out of tourney magic

Michigan head coach John Beilein left watches his

Wagner posted a double-double in the first half.

Regardless of Saturday's game and regardless of what happens on Monday night, the 2018 NCAA tournament is destined to be remembered for the success of a pair of unexpected March Madness underdogs as much as anything else.

"I was happy there was the table over there otherwise I would've fallen, probably", Wagner said.

"I kept looking possession by possession", Wagner said. Michigan's starting guards, Zavier Simpson and Muhammad-Ali Abudr-Rahkman, both went scoreless in the first half, with Abudr-Rahkman missing seven field goals.

MI buried the Ramblers with 19 second-chance points, while also winning the rebounding battle, 36-32.

"And I tried to do my job, tried not to foul and stay solid, build walls and grab rebounds".

Both teams struggled making field goals in the first half, with Loyola shooting 10-for-24 and MI going 9-for-31.

"I liked a lot of things we were doing defensively on him", Moser said. But, Michigan shot 16-for-28 in the second half, compared to Loyola's 12-for-26, to come out with the victory.

Freshman center Cameron Krutwig had 17 points and Clayton Custer 15 for Loyola, which led 32-22 early in the second half before finishing the season 32-6.

After several made free throws, Loyola would claw its way back with its own 9-0 run and lead the Wolverines 17-15 with less than six minutes left in the first half. Six of his 15 rebounds were on the offensive end.

"We made a concerted effort to take away the 3", Beilein said. I don't think it was any one thing.

"He's just a really good player".

"They're a little bit smaller at the forward positions or at some of the positions, and they can really get into you and guard".

The opportunity seemed there for Loyola's taking after the first 20 minutes.

MI trailed 45-37 after Clayton Custer's free throws with 11:25 left in the game. "And to get to this stage, I'm a better person and a better coach for coaching this group". He had his and-one putback and his flex - an exclamation point on the best game of his life. "All of a sudden", Beilein said, "we took off like insane", and Wagner credited "a lot more set plays" and an "offense a lot more organized".

Loyola continued their run after the half and increased their lead to 10 just a minute into it. Marques Townes offers another key piece. When Ingram beat the buzzer - sound familiar? "They believed that they belong".

It was quite a ride for those basketball fans in Rogers Park, one that many there and around the country didn't quite see coming. They chanted "L-U-C!" and held up homemade signs such as "We Want The Fairytale", and "We're On A Mission From God". Sister Jean Dolores-Schmidt and her favorite team, the Missouri Valley Conference champions, making their first NCAA appearance since 1985, will return to Chicago as heroes, regardless. "Work. Win" - and those familiar Harry Potter-esque scarves.
