'Condom challenge' is the latest, unsafe fad among teens

One of the first condom-snorting challenge videos was posted by YouTube star Savannah Strong in 2013, according to ABC News.

Texas parents are among those being warned of the craze, with education specialist Stephen Enriquez telling Fox San Antonio: 'Because these days our teens are doing everything for likes, views and subscribers.

The Condom Challenge is the latest unsafe teen trend that is hopefully not sweeping the nation.

Yes, it's gross. Worse, it's risky, warns Bruce Y. Lee, an associate professor of International Health at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.

There are actually cases of "accidental condom inhalation" in the medical literature. It led to pneumonia and caused the right upper lobe of her lung to collapse. Another woman accidentally swallowed the condom and it blocked her appendix, leading to appendicitis.

"Otherwise, anything else that goes up your nose can damage the sensitive inner lining of your nose, cause an allergic reaction, or result in an infection", Lee wrote.

"Even if you successfully complete the challenge and pull the condom out your mouth, the bottom line is that it's incredibly irritating and a good chance it will wreak havoc on your sinuses, nasal passages, and upper airway", Glatter said.

This fad might be taking off on social media, however, it also reaps many health risks.

Newsweek reports that like most other Internet challenges this is not exactly new, "but rather a resurgence of something bored teens have been doing for years".

Where would one see such a thing, you might ask?

Many of these challenges are done for likes, clicks, shares, and attention.

The idea of threading a condom through your nose and pulling it from your mouth is not new.

On the heels of the Tide Pod challenge comes a very unsafe new craze on social media: the condom-snorting challenge. YouTube has since removed that video, but a summary from The Young Turks can be viewed below.
