Theresa May tours United Kingdom on Brexit Day anniversary

Robert Weighton

Britain is on course to leave the European Union at 2300 GMT on March 29, 2019, severing ties that helped define its national identity, its laws, and its global stature over 46 years of integration with European neighbors.

While the majority of voters in England and Wales backed Brexit, most in Scotland and Northern Ireland wanted the United Kingdom to remain in the EU.

Instead of determining an annual budget each year, she said, a multi-year funding arrangement will be agreed so health chiefs have more certainty and stability from year to year.

But the tour inevitably led to a series of stagey photos as she visited a factory, a group of farmers and a nursery.

New figures from industry body the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) show that 145,475 vehicles were built in the United Kingdom in February - down 4.4 per cent on the 152,232 cars made in the same month past year.

Mrs May's all-day plane trip comes amid polling suggesting that Britain remains deeply divided over Brexit, but has little appetite for a second referendum on the issue.

"I campaigned for Remain, but I, as I said at the time, it was a very balanced decision", she said.

Mrs May also set out a vision of economic prosperity at home, and influence overseas, trading freely with friends and partners across Europe and beyond. Since formal negotiations began between the two sides in June previous year, an agreement has been struck on a Brexit "divorce bill", but the crucial issue of how they will trade together in the longer term has yet to be settled.

Despite misgivings about the government's performance and doubts about the result of the negotiations with the European Union, 68 percent of the respondents say that "those who voted against Brexit should respect the will of the majority" - with only 35 percent thinking there should be a second referendum.

Addressing voters, she said the UK "will thrive as a strong and united country that works for everyone, no matter whether you voted Leave or Remain".

"I always say to people the likelihood is it happens, but it doesn't have to happen, and the first place that's going to decide it is Parliament and MPs should vote according to their conscience", he said.

The people of Britain, the world's sixth-largest economy, caused a major global shock in 2016 by voting narrowly to quit the European Union after a fevered referendum campaign that sharpened regional divisions, pitted young against old and exposed a deep distrust between voters and the political establishment.

Her message will attempt to show unity across the country. The UK contains four proud and historic nations, but together we amount to so much more than the sum of our parts and our Union is an enormous force for good.
