Atlanta Ransomware Attack Freezes City Business

When asked about a workaround for accessing the city's data, acting Chief Information Officer Daphne Rackley said the state's security measures include a "cloud-first" strategy that reflects how seriously it takes the threats of ransomware and other types of malware.

The City of Atlanta is probing the extent of a ransomware cyberattack on several customer-facing networks which has encrypted some data and demanded a payment in cryptocurrency for its return, officials confirmed Thursday. At this time city officials are saying that public safety and airport operations are unaffected.

City sent a tweet in response to the incident, which reads in part: "The City of Atlanta is now experiencing outages on various customer-facing applications, including some that customers may use to pay bills or access court-related information".

Cox said the city would offer employees additional resources to help them protect their information in coming days.

The FBI and Department of Homeland Security (DHS) are working with Atlanta city officials after a cyberattack shut down numerous city's computer systems. NBC affiliate WXIA reported that the city received a ransom demand in bitcoin for $6,800 per unit or $51,000 to unlock the entire system.

"Our Atlanta Information Management team is working diligently with support from Microsoft to resolve the issue".

The city of Atlanta is working with federal partners to determine how to respond to an attack on the city's network and to determine what customer or employee information could have been compromised.

Mayor Keisha Bottoms held a press conference later that day, in which she admitted that officials weren't sure of the extent of the attack at the time, but ensured that they were doing what they could to address it.

The city officials did not say whether a decision has been made on whether or not they will be paying the requested ransom.

Atlanta Police Chief Erika Shields said that her department's emergency response system had not been affected at all.

The FBI, US Department of Homeland Security and Secret Service have been called on "for guidance".
