Microsoft expands the Cloud - including Swiss Datacenters

Microsoft to open its first Middle East cloud sites in Dubai and Abu Dhabi

Microsoft announced on Wednesday it will open two new data centres in the UAE, marking its first such foray into a growing market for cloud services in the Middle East. The expansion is the result of customer demand, showing Microsoft is following their money and further pushing to compete with Amazon and Google in the cloud wars.

The two data centres, the first ones by Microsoft in the region, will be located in Abu Dhabi and Dubai. In addition, the general availability of Microsoft Azure and Microsoft 365 in France has also been announced. Microsoft is planning to offer Microsoft Azure, Office 365 and Dynamics 365 from new datacentre locations, in addition to the options now available in Germany.

"We have seen in the past couple of years that a lot of customers have increasingly put their trust in the Microsoft Cloud services, and once we crossed a certain threshold, we knew that we needed to have a data centre here that could help support their needs".

The new cloud offering will provide enterprise-grade reliability, performance and business continuity, combined with data residency within Germany and connectivity to Microsoft's global public cloud network. "The Azure cloud ensures we are best placed to make this happen and offer our customers robust technology on a secure and proven platform". We have long-standing expertise and deep local relationships in the Middle East. Microsoft said this is a first for an global cloud provider to have a local site in Switzerland, and the move follows consultation with local financial service providers about their needs. Dynamics 365 is also set to follow in early 2019.

"This brings our data centre footprint to a total of 50 regions globally, and we believe that this is the largest of any major cloud provider", Hashish said.

It can be cheaper and easier to deal with existing regulatory requirements if cloud-computing companies choose to lease and operate in existing data center facilities while also partnering with local companies.
