Google AdWords announces ban on all cryptocurrency-related ads

Google to Ban Cryptocurrency, Initial Coin Offering Ads in June

Scott Spencer, Google's Director of Sustainable Ads, said in a blog post that the company has, "updated several policies to address ads in unregulated or speculative financial products like binary options, cryptocurrency, foreign exchange markets and contracts for difference (or CFDs)". Earlier this year, Facebook India took a similar step on cryptocurrency, because as per reports, they are associated with misleading or deceptive promotional practices.

Google will roll out updated policies on advertising in June and these would include a ban on adverts for cryptocurrencies, initial coin offerings, cryptocurrency exchanges and wallets, and trading advice.

Oh well, even with new limits on the availability of Google ads, we expect cryptocurrency to continue being "more efficient than Star Wars at extracting money from nerds".

Alongside Facebook, Google has one of the largest advertising networks in the world, so for a company or ad to be banned form either or indeed both, can be a major blow to product and service promotion.

It will also affect those placed on third-party sites via its ad platforms.

GOOGLE IS GETTING GRUMPY about cryptocurrencies and will ban adverts about them come June.

Giant social media and Google's primary rival for ad dollars, Facebook Inc., took a similar step in January 30, leaving the two largest web-ad sellers out of reach of the cryptocurrency sector. Some dodgier businesses, though, managed to find a loophole to bend the new rule by purposefully misspelling key words like "bitcoin". A Google spokeswoman said the company's policies will try to anticipate workarounds like this.

Google's move to purge virtual currency ads comes just days after the US Securities and Exchange Commission warned that traders should only buy and sell cryptocurrencies on exchanges registered with the financial regulator.

In 2017, Google said it removed more than 3.2 billion advertisements from the web.

While some cryptocurrency advertisements are for legitimate companies, such ad platforms have become hotbeds for cryptocurrency-related scams. In 2017, Google took in over $95.4 billion in revenue from advertising, which was an increase from its 2016 revenue by over 20%.
