Ex-Raiders CB Sean Smith gets 1 year in jail for assault

Sean Smith will be released by Oakland Raiders

He was selected in the second round of the 2009 NFL Draft. He spent 2017 with the Los Angeles Rams, where Raiders offensive coordinator Greg Olson was a quarterbacks coach, and the previous two years with the Washington Redskins under coach Jay Gruden, younger brother of Raiders coach Jon Gruden.

ALAMEDA, Calif. (AP) - The Oakland Raiders are releasing cornerback Sean Smith to create more salary cap room heading into free agency.

Free agency doesn't officially begin until 1 p.m. PST Wednesday, but that's hardly stopped the mayhem with teams coming to verbal agreements with highly coveted players such as Kirk Cousins, Case Keenum, Sammy Watkins, Malcolm Butler and others. That is if McKenzie and Gruden have decided to make that a priority.

Back in March of 2016, Sean Smith signed a 4-year, $40 million deal with $20 million guaranteed with the Oakland Raiders.

Carrier has 36 career receptions for 327 yards and a touchdown since entering the league in 2012 as an undrafted free agent from Beloit, a Div. III college in Wisconsin.

However, with former Saints and Seahawks TE Jimmy Graham signing with the Packers Tuesday, the Raiders will need to look elsewhere for a pass-receiving tight end during the 2018 offseason.

Given that price, it's possible the Raiders were never truly in the running for the 28-year-old with 18 career interceptions. The Raiders formally cut Smith Monday night.

Another top cornerback on the market, former Patriot Malcolm Butler, is getting a reported five-year, $61 million deal with the Titans.
