Trump says goodbye to 'globalist' economic adviser Gary Cohn

Trump to visit California next week, San Diego stop expected

The U.S. has gone down this road before, most disastrously with the Smoot-Hawley Tariff Act of 1930, which most historians and economists credit with provoking the Great Depression.

The resignation of Gary Cohn is a significant blow to Donald Trump's Presidency, and recovering from it will be a significant challenge.

Politically, the key question is whether the rest of the Republican party follows him. "I want to see the photo of President Trump crying with, I don't know, whoever's left". The stock market reacted swiftly, falling 500 points by midafternoon, and many in Congress watched in disbelief that Trump would make such a decision without taking their concerns into account, much less the effect on the broader economy the decision was likely to provoke.

Trump's early appointments to key Cabinet positions and to the White House policy-making apparatus were often stellar. Some may argue that what Mr. Trump is doing isn't all that different from what one previous GOP president, Ronald Reagan, did when he punished Japan for its trade practices, and another, George W. Bush, did when he imposed his own version of steel tariffs.

But if Mr. Moon has managed to put himself in the "driver's seat", as South Koreans like to say, of worldwide efforts to defuse the crisis over North Korea's nuclear programme, it is unclear if he has a specific deal in mind. The South Korean official relayed that Kim wanted to meet with Trump — and the president immediately accepted, according to a White House official, who was not authorized to discuss the meeting and was speaking on condition of anonymity.

Trump has not made a firm decision, those briefed on the process said. Rob Porter, the White House staff secretary, resigned after spousal abuse allegations.

The president and the combative Navarro share the same hard-line views on trade that were a centerpiece of Trump's campaign.

Cohn is among the most senior officials to resign to date. On one side were Cohn and free-trade advocates, and on the other was the Administration's protectionist wing led by Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross, trade negotiator Robert Lighthizer and Trump's personal trade swami, Peter Navarro.

Trump reiterated his misleading claim on the same day he officially imposed tariffs of 25 percent and 10 percent on steel and aluminum, respectively.

But even if Trump agrees to compromise on his current tariff plans, it will still leave a problematic situation for Asia. He told aides that he been proclaiming for 30 years that the United States needed a more protectionist approach, according to two White House officials not authorized to speak publicly about private conversations.

Europe and China lashed out against the president's tariff plan. Trump's protectionist fervor was central to his politics long before he decided whether he was a Democrat or a Republican, a NY liberal or a heartland conservative. These moves suggested that Trump would be willing to modify his hardline "America First" trade policy into "America first, but not alone".
